warn winch question

Per another thread I mentioned I picked up a Warn 9.5ti winch.
At time of purchase I did not know how to test and it did not have a remote.

After reading up I found that the 9.5ti winch actually had a 16.5ti motor on it.
After watching a you tube video I figured out how to "jump" the leads to test if the motor was in working condition. The motor appears to work in both directions.

I sent away for the remote which arrived today. After plugging in remote once I connected a battery sourceto the winch. As soon as it had power the red temperature light started blinking on the remote. When using the remote the winch also worked both forward and reverse.

Does anyone have experience with Warn winches and the temp sensor?
The fellow mentioned the winch came off a military vehicle. The winch was taken apart and sent via mail. When re-assembled could a wire have been crossed or does this mean something else (bad?)

Thanks,

-Ed

What type of military vehicle and was it originally 24 volt?

Here is a 24v 5 wire diagram link

I was told off an amoured truck "toyota landcruiser". Did a little searching on google and did find them. I would think 12 volt but I was surprised to find out that the motor was upgraded. Makes sense if they are heavier vehicles.

edit - I was able to contact the guy, he said 12volt they had convertors for the radios?

I got a hold of the fellow and asked
.. he said that the US military used them on missions to blend in. Special ops/ forces
Mostly recon and short missions, they did not like them much because they could not fight out of them.

At any rate, if you're not sure of the history of the winch, I would recommend a teardown to see what shape it's in. Not hard to do. If it all looks good you can at least re-grease the planetary gears and clean the crud out of things.

Replacement parts aren't expensive. Good to know your winch is in workable condition if you're out in the wilderness alone.

All, just want to give you an update. I did call a Warn Service center for Mid West
Midwest US
G.D.S. 4X4 fellow was very helpful.
Basically he mentioned that I can pull wire off of the thermal sensor to test to see if blinking light is stopped. If yes I can leave the wire off or purchase a new sensor 30.00/40.00 bucks.

He mentioned that if you are not hard core off roading using the @#$% out of it, that leaving the sensor off is fine. It will not affect the use of the winch.

So at this point I think it is safe to plan mounting.

Anyone have a large winch mounted while retaining stock bumper. (I understand that the stock bumper alone is not enough to use for winching. I have looked at threads whereas the winch is hidden (preferred) however I do not think that is possible with the size of this winch. In this case I may have to wear it proud.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I picked up a great winch at a fantastic price.

Winch pics...
9.5ti however it has 16.5 motor, not as big as some winches out there but bigger than what I was going to use.
