Water pump ports

The two small ports on the water pump. One is for the heater and one goes to the thermostat. Does it matter which one goes on which or are they the same? Thanks!

The hose on the Thermostat only reaches one fitting.

On my Serpentine Windsor they are side by side and either can be reached. Thanks for the replies!

Thread it and put a plug in. The rubber caps they sell don't last.
