I headed over to Britco Racing Engines today (where my rig is) to do a little more work under the hood to prep the engine bay for the NEW engine. While I was there I asked to take a look at the "leftovers" of what I believed was a recently "freshened" mill.
The first thing I looked at in awe was the timing chain cover with the "donut" shape cut into the backside with the 5.0 timing gear (see pics). Then I went and took a long look at the old pistons (.060 over). The first one had a bent skirt and a crack, plus it was knurled up pretty good, too (as were all of them). It also had one stuck ring. Three more showed with cracks on both sides of one skirt. Six of eight had frozen rings.
The hydraulic lifters looked really nice! pffftt... They were the only thing that looked good, as, the PO had installed them with the nice Comp Cam 270 duration cam and lifter kit a couple of years ago.
Glad this was all discovered while it was in my own town and not 1500 miles away after it blew up.
