I am dropping my 302 from project 69 off at the machine shop in the morning. For the typical work up. Valve job, hot tank the block, bored 30 over and check for cracks, have the crank polished and a new ring gear pressed on the flywheel. Soon it will be back and I am looking for ideas on cams. I will be running 4:56's with 35's and a nv3550 trans. 302 from my 69 with edelbrock proformer intake with a 4 barrel, headers and MSD ignition. It will see both on road and some trails on the weekend no rock crawling. I have a guy that builds motors that is giving me a hand and he likes Lunati, and Crane. What would guys recemmend. Thanks 69sport

Take a look at the Extreme 4X4 cams from Competition cams. That's what I am running and I so far have been very happy with it.

first decide what rpm range you want your power to be delivered at then act accordingly.
I use the Comp cams that delivers its power from 800 to 4500, my ohter choice would be Isky

Rpm Range

This might be a stupid question but how to you determine you rpm range. I want to be able to run on the highway and have some lower end for the trail. I am running 4:56's 35 and the nv3550 if that helps. Thanks 69sport

THen I am guessing from your desciption that you want one that will give you power in the woods from idle and not have to gas it to get the power. Thats what I did after years of using high rpm motors. Mine gets great power from idle and falls on its face at 4500, no damaged parts and lots of low end. Mine has 411s and will scoot down the Hiway at 84, too fast for this cat, I am going to 456s

I run a crane 266 grind it works well for my RPM range. To find your RPM range you can use this calculator http://www.randysringandpinion.com/content/calculators/RPM.asp
but you also need to determine how you plan to use the Bronco with a NV3500 I would guess more hiway driving than offroading but you will have to answer that. Your best bet is to call the cam companies and get there recommendations.

Don't worry so much about what cam company compared to cam duration and lift. I would get around no more than 210 degree intake at .050" for a 302. Maybe the next step down. With the nv3550 and 4:56's this shouldnt be to bad of a setup. Any bigger and your off idle torque could be a little lacking.

My old 302 had a Ford Motorsport A311 cam, and it really worked well for me. It made power from just off idle to 5000. If I remember correctly, the specs were: 204/214 duration and .448/.472 lift. Edelbrock and Summit both have cams of the same specs. I now have a 5.0 motor with the E303 roller cam that's probably a little too rowdy....

I put a Melling 204/214 .448/.472 in my 30yr old 302. I really woke it up. Many different companies make that grind cam. But in my 393W I just finished I went with a Motorsport M-6250-M50. It is the '93 Cobra "R" cam .453 lift with 210/220 dur. I'm completely satisfied with how it performs. It has a good smooth idle and excellent off idle torque, but with quick response and will pull steady to 5k. I had someone from this board to run my #'s on the desk top dyno, made 330hp and 400ftlbs. With around 400ftlbs from 1500 to 4k. The best part about the cam was I only paid $30 for it from FRP.

The cams were right around what I expected...rule of thumb...go with the lesser cam (so around the 206 duration). People always go with a cam bigger than they should just because its "cool".

Still hard to recommend any one cam as I dont know your exact useage but considering your tire size gear ratio and overall cruise RPM in OD I'm sure all these cams are close to your needs all are within range and will perform good. Not all the companies give you a cruise range but your on the lower edge of the crane cam's specs 2200-2600 cruise range and with your combo you should be running about 2100 RPM at 70 MPH not real sure about the others but they are all an improvement over stock. I like to have the cam in the middle of the cruise range because thats where its most efficent. Although I might rule out the comp and lunati as they are a little bigger than the others as far as specs go but each brand has slightly different specs all around so they may still be good as thats what they are recommending. Pick what you like. My feeling is that the Edelbrock may be the best perfroming for your setup.
