i was going to replace the gear oil in my factory limited slip rear and was told you have to use or mix in special oil for the limited slip - could someone point me in the right direction?

Usually you need a bottle of friction modifier usually sold at ford dealerships. There are some brands of gear oil that already contain it but I've never used them. Also most parts stores carry tubes of additive but again I've never used that either.
More than likely you unit is well worn and using gear oil with addivitve already in it would work fine. If you find that your rear end is popping then you will need to add some more additive.
