What to do about tiger striped paint?

For the past few days I've been rattle-canning different panels on the turd. As you can guess, since I'm rattle-canning it, I'm not expecting perfection, but I'd still like it to be as good as possible.

I chose a charcoal grey (almost black) metallic paint, which is probably the worst coating paint I've ever used. I don't know if it's due to being metallic or what. No big deal, just apply more coats... which I did. However on the tailgate, and one panel there's these tiger stripes where it went on heavier than the other spots.

Will wet sanding fix this?

Here's the best pic I could get of it...

The stripes are from the dry edge of your passes, and them being too far apart. You can try to wet sand it out with some 800 or 1000, followed by 1500, 2000 and buff and polish, but that's a bit far to go for a rattle can paint job....

I'd think sand it off with 400 and start over on that area. Was that side facing the sun and had that panel gotten warmer than the other side. Lot of things can happen to you. Thats about how my rattle can thing work out. But don't give up. Beats scratching up a 2000.00 paint job.

I can sand it off and lay another coat down. I think the problem was I was using too short of passes. On the door I just painted I used longer passes and it turned out fine. Thanks

I agree with Casey, you have too keep a wet line when you are painting. Your overspray should always land in wet paint as well, it will be hard to do with a rattle can. Start at the bottom and work your way up.

Hope it helps,

I'd sand it some then just put another coat on then do a drop coat to get the metallic right.

Rotate directions every coat, up and down, then side to side... But a rattle can dries so fast im not sure it will help?

Just tell people it's a very expensive custom painted tiger theme. Truly a one of a kind and un matchable.

I just had the same problem as I was trying to match my front clip closer to the rest of the EB since I had it off anyway... It failed, but I was happy with how the spray paint job came out... I started off with the stripes like you show, and found I was swiping too fast in fear of runs, when I slowed down I could literally see each next spray line merge in with the prior one; it was definitely an AHA! moment for me... Also, all color coats were sprayed after dark :X (that's when the wind went away)

I am pretty impressed with spray jobs on here recently...having shot many different cars and trucks with single stage and basecoat/clearcoat, I must say that shooting metallic with a spray can must be very difficult.

If you don't already have one, get a trigger handle for rattle cans. When painting big jobs it really saves your finger and helps with control. And costs less than a can of paint! ;)

Did you sand out the stripes, or just lay another coat on top of it?

Thanks Jon! I'll have to pick of of those up. Although the larger white nozzles are much more finger-friendly than those old skinny ones.

The only way to fix it now since it's dry is to sand/scuff it and reshoot it. You can't buff out mottling. Maybe the spray can nozzle didn't have a good spray pattern when you got to that side of the Bronco. These are some of the causes of mottling and by knowing them you can possibly prevent it...
This is when spraying with a regular gun. Improper or unbalanced spray pattern, tilting the gun, too close to the surface, uneven spray passes, and not applying a proper drop coat. Good luck.

My lines were when I was doing a coat of primer. I did do a quick scuff before moving onto color- but I never had the stripes with the color. I like the gun tool, my finger definitely was not comfy! lol

Yeah, those triggers only work on the old skinny nozzles.
