noticed a few different venders selling a 5.5 lift,is that pretty much the max for a EB? since it has a short wheelbase and all? guess the driveshaft angle comes in play really quick when lifting one of these..what's everyones opinion on the different lift kits out there? i'd like to hear your opinions, thanks;D

The 5.5" lift gets you close to driveline angle problems. Count on doing a tie rod over mod as well as a track bar riser/adjustable track bar to go ahead and alleviate any bumpsteer issues. You will want to do those anyway to position yourself for more lift later.

Not sure of the lift on this one but it's pretty tall.

What if I'm just bored and want to build a freak-a-beast with 50s. That would be a good enough reason for me. Where would Bob Chandler (Bigfoot) be if he just did the norm. Where can I buy a 10" lift?;D

Find any four wheel drive magaizine from the late 80's or early 90's and look at the lifts they offered. 8, 10, 12" all day long. Add 1½" to the advertisd height for use on an early Bronco.

3½" is about the most you want to run with stock drivetrain.
5½" starts putting aftermarket driveshafts at there limit.

If you really want that kind of rig, I would put some unimog axles under it. There are few on this board that way.

Tall lifts suck.

There's never any reason, whatsoever to go over 3-1/2"

HMMMMM.......Though I tend to agree I don't see a problem with someone wanting a big lift. Unless he is actually using it to wheel. It seems 3.5-5.5 are good functioning 4x4 lifts I was talked in to the Cage 5.5 and hind sight tells me I should have went 3.5. I have it now so that is what is going on.%)

Jason ran our 7" lift with spring rockers and a 2"? body lift on 37" tires. Too tall for me, I like the 4.5" lift with 35's. You can see his EB on our site and in our catalog. It is the one modeling the Can Back top. He lowered it for Gretchen before he went back into the Army. Now he is back he is planning a new EB but has not said how much lift he plans to have. FWIW I can't keep the 6.5 and 7" coils in stock.

I disagree with this. I'm at 7.5" total lift, (5.5 suspension and 2 body) and I need every bit of it here on Dusy trail in CA. When I was at 4.5 total (2.5 suspension and 2 body with 35's) it was a nightmare.

I cruise down the highway at 75 MPH no problems at all with capability of going faster.

What made it a nightmare?

Taller lift doesn't get you more clearance. If your tires are rubbing, then you need to trim the sheetmetal to fit. It can be done tastefully, even with big meats. Long, soft springs are great for lots of articulation, I'll grant you that. Raising your rig that high sure makes it tippy though.

I was clearing 38" TSL's on my rig with stock leafs, sagged out 3-1/2" coils and a 2" BL. My wife's rig will be no more than 2-1/2" total lift on the 36" Iroks (I'm actually shooting for stock height though), and I won't hesitate to take it down some nasty trails.

For serious trail use, nothing beats a nice low COG for stability.

Taller lift does get you more clearance as far as undercarriage and wheel travel is concerned. I agree with you that as little lift as possible while still having good functionality is the way to go. I do however use every bit of the lift I have as far as wheel travel goes and being able to crawl over rough sections of the trail that I wouldnt have been able to manuever over with the lower lift. I'm a big fan of only lifting it how much is needed, but I use all of mine.

I see, you're liking the lift for the belly height. That makes sense. I figure on scraping, and use my rockers and skidplate when I can as pivots.

I'm raising up things like spring hangers and radius arm mounts to achieve a lot of the same advantages that you get from a taller lift. This with a complete belly pan will keep me from having too many issues.

I'm kicking around the idea of using some UHMW on the belly pan and boatsides (from the frame to the rock ski is to be plated)

I think you'd love having portal axles. If you hit the lotto, look into some Portal Tek or Sunray hybrid axles. You can get the ground clearance, with a much smaller lift. This is how I'm planning to build my buggy. It'll sit lower than a stock EB, on 40" tires but with ~19" of clearance under the pumpkin, and a 22-24" belly height.

That sounds like a really neat setup. I dont have any skidplates at the moment but I'm looking into building some very soon, those things can be lifesavers :)

If you have any pics of your skidplate/rocker guards I'd love to see them.
