Which carburetor would you suggest?

Hey everybody, looking to replace my carb (loaner carb :) ) and am looking for any suggestions you might have. I'm currently running a pretty much stock 302 and most of my use will be camping trails, rolling to the beach, around town and maybe down to baja if I get the guts!

Let me know what you think? 2bl vs 4bl? What CFM? Which choke? Motorcraft, Autolite,Holley?

Thanks!!

Autolite 2100 (simplicity at its best). The manual choke is fail proof but then you need the cable. I have a electric choke that also pulls heat via the exaust mani. not sure exactly what they call that setup but it works ausome so far.

I see them all the time on craigslist for 50-100 bucks. There is at least 3 of them on there right now.

X2 nothing wrong with the stock carbs. it will get you on the road quicker and cheaper than a manifold swap.

X3. The 2100 or 2150 is a good, safe carb. Performs well on slopes. Easy to rebuild. Cheap to service. Common misconceptions about airflow demands, though. Most 302 motors cannot justify more thn about 600 Cfm. Even 550 is usually optimal uness your puling a huge amount of volume and the volumetric effeciency is abovev average. Is purely math. Don't over carburate a motor!!! It will only hurt you.

Brand wise I suggest the motorcraft is as stated. Also, for bigger bucks and street friendly I like quickfuel carbs. Newer holleys are ok, like street avengers or truck avengers.

Edelbrocks and carter afbs are .... Reliable I'd say. Just not big performers. IMO. I can't stand quadrajets, but I know some people like them.

Never mind all if that. Go EFI !!!!!

I got a rebuilt motorcraft 2100 on my stock 302 and can't beleive the power it makes. Like you, its for cruising around town with alittle off road. No need for a 4 barrel. Very impressed with the power of the 2 barrel. Got mine at gotta fish carbs - really impressed with these guys - check them out.

4V carbs are more of a want thing than need. Dont get me wrong I rather run 4V carbs as tuning parts tend to be easier to get and you can get better power and mileage with them when tuned properly and driven conservatively. but in my opinion your better off sticking with the 2v for now maybe modifiy the exhuast system as thats where 302's really need help.

agreed, when i eventually remove my intake, i will be going back to a 2V setup. I dont see a need for a 4 barrel in my use.

Thanks Prest. Looks like the site has a ton of 2100 variations. PO said the motor is out of a mustang, but I don't know what year? Is there a big difference between the many 2100's?

I also don't have the cable set up for the manual choke, so I'm thinking auto or electronic choke?

Only real differance is usaully if the engine has a EGR system or not as it affects tuning. But overall a 2100 is a 2100 besides type of choke setup and CFM rating thats about the only other differances. I believe the 1.12 venturi was stock for 302's.

That helps, thanks broncnaz. Difference between auto choke and electronic Choke? Sorry, still learning.

kent wash.
Yes there is a lot of varitions of the 2100 the smallest was like .98 to as large as a 1.30 if I remember right. The stock bronco came with 1.08, which if you were going to stay 100% stock would probley be best.

If the carb you have is a stock mustang and it is a 1.12 it probley will work very well if you are runing headers and open air cleaner, but it might work very well in a stock applacation also, so in the end it sometimes its a roll of the dice. So I guest what you want is between 1.08-1.12.

What ever carb you get in this size range take the numbers stamped on the front mounting tab were it bolts down and used the specs for that carb if you rebuild it, if it a mustang use mustang specs during the rebuild not bronco specs.

A couple last things if the carb you looking at, looks like its been threw a mass rebuilder (exchange at a auto parts store) I would pass, because you don't know what you have inside. Finding the OEM manual choke parts is a good way to go, it solves a lot of problems if the carb is trying to be used with headers. Alot of pick-ups used them and all 2100's are the same.

I cannot comment on the other brands but having a 68 Mustang (289) for a number of years and my bronco (302) for about 8 years (3-4 of those yrs running lol) I had the motorcraft 2bbl setup on both of those vehicles. I never had one carbuerator issue. Very reliable IMO.

Thanks. Yes, I am running headers with the open air cleaner, stock fuel pump, Pertronix ignition, manual 3 speed, 33's and a 3.5 lift.

I am running a 4 barrol and it runs good but no better than the 2100 that came on it stock. I wish I could do it over and I would stay stock. I just run a RV cam and don't need more carb.
