Looks like we are on for now, but keep in mind Rod Run is the same weekend. So if that ends up being cancelled I wonder if SC will follow suit. Or if Tennessee decides to ban events that would ruin it too.

Accidents and suicides have zero to do with a brand new infectious disease with zero vaccine. This is a global pandemic that is just getting started. The death rate is much higher than seasonal influenza.

You and Rob would make great Friends. There is already a COVID thread in the off topic, go over there. Gov. Lee has requested no gathering more than 250 be held, but right now said it was up to those hold events as to whether they should cancel. Of course that is subject to change.

It’s not panic dictating this. The closures are based on the recommendation of Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Nobody knows how many Americans are infected because our administration decided not to utilize WHO tests developed in Berlin. Now we are weeks behind other countries in testing. We’re behind Vietnam by a large margin.

I think panic does have a lot to do with this. I'm not saying that covid 19 is not serious. It is a valid concern. The seasonal flu is more common, and it has caused far more deaths in the US this flu season. The media has helped drive the panic that we are seeing.

Panic has everything to do with this. Not disparaging the fact it is a virus it is a cold type virus. To January 1 we lost 30,000 lives to the influenza virus in the US last year (2019). To date globally we have lost under 5000 to covid19. The fact that the survival rate is so high, most will recover and be immune to this strain the same as all of the other viruses that effect the human population. You cannot be expected to be taken serious when you ignore the facts that there are far more dangerous things out there that everyone chooses to ignore yet grasping into issues like this.

There is no test available for most of us, the death rate is much higher, and there is no vaccine. This isn’t the seasonal flu.

In the county I live in, there's not been one test taken to my knowledge as of yesterday evening. We have a large Hispanic population, and large Marshallese population, an air force base, and two college campuses. Zero have met the requirements.

Unless you test in the morning upon arriving at work, and then test each time you encounter someone different during your day, or go to a new environment during your day, and quarantined yourself until after each test result, each prior test would be pointless. It's not feasible or practical whatsoever. Nobody can be serious about mass testing until we shut down the postal and parcel services, taxis, UBERS, credit/debit card kiosks........there's no end to potential contacts that people encounter during the day other than everyone locking themselves in, and that's not going to happen either.

The point was, you don't hear about these deaths from the media.

Do you have any statistics to show the death rate being higher?

The statistics are there, but it's not a straight forward as just saying that the mortality rate for Coronavirus is over 3 times that of the flu. 3.4% vs 1%. Some places it's higher than 3% due to higher percentage of older people in a certain area as well as the population density of an area. Simply the more people that live there, the greater the odds of getting it, the greater the odds of it being an older or immune compromised person, the greater the number of deaths. We simply don't have the percentage of cases per population as the other countries, simply because we did something about travel restrictions and other countries didn't

3.4% Mortality Rate estimate by the WHO as of March 3
Mortality Rate in China as of Feb. 20 (3.8% nationwide, 5.8% in Wuhan, 0.7% other areas)
Mortality Rate in China as of Feb. 4 (2.1% nationwide, 4.9% Wuhan, 3.1% Hubei, and 0.16% other provinces) reported by the NHC of China
Study providing a tentative mortality rate of 3%
Death rate among patients admitted to hospital (HFR): 15%
Days from first symptom to death: 14 days
Comparison with other viruses
How to calculate the mortality rate during an outbreak

Good news. So far 99.9999306% of the US population (2499 cases/ 360,000,000 people) have not tested positive for the virus

That is great news! I figured out that I cannot possibly test positive if I do not take the test, so I’m playing it safe.
