Continous duty relay right off the battery. "ARM" switch off keyed power in the cab. Key off the winch is dead. Key on, switch off, winch is still dead. Allows you to power the winch up without opening the hood to turn it on.

The battery feed to the winch, the one everyone wants to put the disconnect switch on. Instead of putting a disconnect switch that will likely be in a hard place to reach when you really need to reach it, put a relay in its place instead. They have heavy duty relays (that look a lot like a starter solenoid but are continous duty rated). Then use a switch in the cab to turn it on and off. Power the switch with either run or accessory power so you don't accidently run the battery down. So the only way the winch will have power is if you have the key on and the cab mounted "arming" switch turned on, then the winch will have power and will work with the remote.

Got mine from napa same one that's on bulldozers cat or JohnDeere.I put it on after I rolled my bronco and was turning it back over and the winch would not stop.I was lucky I had a friend that was a fast thinker and took the batt cable off while it was pulling it self strait up a hill to the tree we had it hooked to it was a bad feeling.

My battery has dual terminals. One set is used as usual for the engine and in cab stuff. The other is used just for the winch power.

That's how mine are too.

I never saw the need for the added cost and complexity of a switch (or HD solenoid) that can deal with 500A continuous. I guess having one not shut off when you told it to could change yr mind about that.

Some guys are lucky.

Winches will kill you quicker than anything if you're not careful. Please don't get in the path of a snapping winch cable or you might live to regret it. That's why they come with long remotes so you can stay way out of the way. When I winch or tow I try to have a defense against a snapping cable by not being in its path. Watching that video and seeing the guy get his head near the cable under tension made me cringe.
