I just got my "new" 71 home and found that the PO had removed both the leads from the stop light switch I cant find the wires, he removed them. He ran a single wire from the switch back to the rear light but did not connect it. Why...who knows!

But I want to get my brake lights working, I need to know if I am doing this right. There are 2 wires from the BL switch a red and red-blk the red should
go to the light switch, this is hot all the time?? and the red-blk goes to the signal light switch and the light switch and this on when the brake is applyed. Does this sound right?? Any input would be apreciated.

Thanks,
Rick.

Well I have made some progress but there is still an issue. The brake lights only work when a signal light is on... no brake lights on there own.

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on??

Thanks
Rick

Sounds like a bad ground. the brake light buckets must be grounded (normally attached to the body) for the light to work right.

I will check for proper grounding tonight. Could the turn signal switch be the cause of the problem? Where the wires comes out of the steering coloum there is a factory plug (connector) the PO has a jumper wire from the front LFT signal to the back LFT signal. If I unplug the jumper wire the LFT back signal does not work. This makes me think he had problem with the signal switch?? Could my problem be the signal switch? does the signal switch control how the brake lights work since the brake and signal lights share the same wire?

Thanks,
Rick.

That is a good wiring diagram... the color helps, thanks. Do you think that because the front and back left signal lights were jumpered at the conector below the signal switch that the switch is not working properly?

Thanks again.
Rick.
