Woo Hoo EFI score

I just got all the parts to do a EFI/serpentine bet conversion for free. Woo Hoo. From the computer to all the engine bay wiring harness to a good part of the fuel lines, to complete upper and lower intakes ect. I also was able to get the alternator and power steering pump with brackets and pulleys.

I wish it had all come off of a mustang, since their seems to be a lot more of those conversions, but I couldn't pass up the deal of all the parts off of a 89 grand marquis.

Anybody ever do a conversion from a marquis and know of any pitfalls or differences between it and a conversion from a mustang?

Thanks in advance

Hank

Well the biggest difference is the Grand Marquis is Speed Density vs Mass Air.

Not a problem if you have a stock cam in your engine. If it a highly modified engine your will want to convert it to Mass Air.

There is a ton of info on this site about the conversion so just do a seach.

I did this converions on my 66 Mustang and have the Grand MArquis wiring diagrams. If you need copies we can try to figure a way to get them to you.

Is the grand marquise a single belt or the double serp belt? I generally find them as a standard rotation water pump duel serp belt system.
Not sure how the brackets on those clear the frame and inner fenders.

The 89 I got was a double but you ditched one belt because it was for all the smog and AC stuff. You only have teh stuff on the drivers side, PS Pump and ALT

Yes it's a speed density system, I would like to go to mass air, but I figure i'll work with what I have. Yes it is a double pulley system, I got the pulleys and brackets for the alternator and power steering pulley, I left the Ac and smog pump and brackets on the motor, figured I'd never use them. The alternator and power steering pump mount pretty close to the motor, so I don't see any problems with them hitting the fenders.

G money, if I could get the wiring diagrams from you, I'd appreciate it, I got all of the wiring from the engine compartment, so help in thining it out and sorting what goes where would be nice.

Thanks again

The original 5.0 I did on mine was a 90 Grand Marquis motor. To this day I am still running the serpentine stuff off it which I transferred to the 5.8 I put in it. It is a standard rotation and as long as the power steering is mounted outside the frame it will work fine. For the wiring I followed the diagrams in the Probst EFI book and then later converted that to the Mustang MAF system. (This required changing around and adding a few wires at the ecm) The wiring between them is actually close enough though that the SD and MAF ecm's can be plugged into either system and it will run by just adding or removing the vacuum line to the BP/MAP sensor. (The check engine light comes on since the smog sensors are wired different between them) I've carried the grand marquis ecm as a emergency spare and in one case actually used it. (Right now my brother is using it in his which is actually wired for the Mustang MAF system with a Mustang harness)

As to how well it will work it should be fine as long as the motor is close to stock.

you may run into problems with the intake running into the brake MC. i had to rotate the upper intake 180 so it would fit. when you do that you also need a spacer to get the upper intake higher (1" available from summit) to clear the fuel presure regulator. the tps, egr and water jacket need to be extended and i found that a modular engine 4.6 or 5.4 crown vic throttle cable was long enough to reach arount the front of the intake. the smog/ac bracket will hit the passenger side wheel well.

Unless something changed from 89 to 90 then the Grand Marquis/Crown Vic intake is already over the passenger side so none of this should be an issue.

The factory setup on the engine I pulled it from was on the drivers side, I know I am going to have to spin the upper 180 degrees to make it clear. It still has the factory throttle cable on it, i figured when I spun it I was going to have to use a mustang cable to make it work. Thanks for the tip. I'm also not going to use the smog/ac brackets, so that will not be an issue.

Now I just need to order the Probst book and start figuring the wiring out.

Thanks again

If it's hanging over the drivers side then a Mustang cable isn't going to make any difference since both will have the longer cable. If you have a short cable then it was already hanging over the passenger side. (I.E. With the throttle body on the drivers side the cable doesn't need to be as long)

i think we are saying the same thing... stock setup has the throttle body/air filter on the drivers side. i needed to 180 it to point to the passenger side.

here is a shot of the final location

We tried that when we put the Grand Marquis EFI on my brothers to see if it would clear the Hydroboost better and it was even worse. His is the other way (I.E. the way it came stock) so that it will have enough room for the hydroboost. (We seem to be saying that it needs to be exactly opposite of each other for the same reason)

that goes to show ya there's more than one way to skin a cat! got any pics? wondering how you cleared the air tube with it on that side. i tried everything to not have to swap it over like i did but could not come up with a good way to do it :p i already had the motor in and running with all the efi stuff wired, then had to pull it all apart again and lengthen the wires/hoses/throttle cable etc.

Let's see if I can make this work.
attachment.php

Keep in mind that this was an in progress pik. We were pretty rushed since we only had 5 weeks to tear the body off to repair the frame and then build it up for SOB. (http://www.classicbroncos.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69276) The buildup included replacing all of the drivetrain except the motor. The EFI was an afterthought sort of since we originally thought it would need to wait until after SOB. It took me one night to trace out all of the wiring in the harness on my living room floor so we decided to put it in which took about 3 hours total. (including fuel lines, etc.) The air tube (not shown) is part of a flexible tube that I bought for mine (I had about 2 extra feet) from the local industrial hose supplier. (Hydraulic lines, fire truck hoses, etc.) It is a bit more flexible than the stock tubes. I don't recall how close to the master cylinder it runs but I'm pretty sure it isn't touching it.

hmmm, looks like the air tube is pointing right at the MC but it might just be the angle of the shot.
It isn't. I updated the post with more information. It probably has a lot to do with the particulr Hydroboost used. His bolts right to the firewall. We did have to turn the hydroboost over (accumulator at the top) to make it all clear.
