I have created this new thread since one of the other paint color related threads seems to be just replies with people just telling what color their Bronco is (factory color or otherwise) and another has photos of Bronco of various colors, but I know at least a couple of those are not correct.

My goal is to create a complete, and definitive reference of Bronco paint colors that will include factory paint codes, cross reference by years, etc., and eventually photos of Broncos with verified correct paint codes, not photos pulled from the net and assumed to be certain colors.

I have pulled all my original sales brochures and made lists of all the colors. I do not have any of my paint cards here at the house, and only a couple years of them at the shop, so I have used the corresponding codes posted in one of the other threads for now which I am assuming were correct for those provided.

I also added a few paint related notes that are found in the sales brochures. Some colors were also designated with (RPO), which I believe refers to a commercial fleet color option.

The forum will not allow the formatting I had for the data columns, but the information is presented in the following order:

I'm trying to clean up some of this and need the following paint codes in the list below.

Please note that a specific color name may have two different codes for different years (i.e. Royal Maroon has code 2 for 1972 & 1973, but code B for 1970).

Also note that a given paint code can be completely different between years (i.e. Code "B" in 1970 is Roayal Maroon, and in 1972 is Wind Blue).

Therefore, the code must match the name for each year and I can not just assume the code from another year is the same.

Broncos typically used colors from the Ford truck color selections, but I have also found some that were from the Ford Car selections as well.

1966 Light Turquoise
1977 Castillo Red

Once I get all the codes to complete the my list above, I will create a chart that will show show which specific colors were used which years as well as some other interesting info about the many colors offered such as:

Wimbledon White is the only color offered all years.

Raven Black was offered in all years except 1972

My 76 window invoice states that my special decor is Cayan red. My VIN tags color code is number 2, which in your original list calls the color tangerine. So which is it, tangerine or cayan red?

Fred

the 1976 dealer sales brochure does not list "Tangerine", but does list "Cayan Red"

My list (above in posts #1 and #2) do not have "Tangerine" listed as it was never a name for a Bronco color that I have seen in any of the brochures.

The list you are referring to is one posted by another forum member in another thread, which is what I am trying to clean up and clarify since that list is ALL colors used by FoMoCo for that year which includes many never used on a Bronco.

If your invoice says Cayan Red and your VIN shows color code 2, I will enter that in as the code for that one which I was missing.

Keep in mind color names doesn't mean a whole lot. Ford might call it one thing but PPG, Dupont, or Sherwin Williams might call it something similar or totally different. I found these thru Sherwin Williams and tcpglobal.com

Thanks Allen!

Yes, the names can be deceiving for sure! Also, the codes for the same name from one year to another are not always the same (1973 Royal Maroon is code 2, but 1970 is code B, 1976 Indio Tan is code X, but 1977 Indio Tan is code 6U, etc. ), which is why I am hesitant to assume and use code "I" for 77 Bahama Blue.

Is there any way to tell if different years are actually the same color, but maybe just had name changes for marketing?

I have some pages from paint books with paint chips, but those are so small, it is often hard to get a feel for the color.

What would be really cool, is if we can get all these colors and codes sorted out, would be to have some 4x6 inch pieces of metal laser cut in the shape of a Bronco silhouette and then have a sample of each color on them to make a display board we could take to the Roundup and possibly use sometime at a display like we had indoors at the 2006 All-Ford Nationals for the 40th Anniversary with all the toys and the framed display I made with the 66-96 sales brochures.

What are the odds you can talk one of your suppliers into mixing you up some samples to shoot?

I have run into different paint codes with the same formulas before. MK and 7F are an example from the late 90's. Same name and formula but different codes. Sometimes they will change paint codes and names but same formula. I have no idea why they do it but I ALWAYS go by the code on the car.

In Spies I was able to check those two paint codes 1970 "B" and 1973 "2" for Royal Maroon and they are the same formulas.

Are you getting the color names from the Bronco brochures? Pinto yellow sounds like it would be used on Pinto's???

If I have a formula in Spies, I can mix them myself and spray them on spray out cards. The problem with Spies is many times they don't have all the formulas that old since they didn't sell paint in the US back then. At least that is what tech support has told be before.

Yes, all the names I listed are directly off original dealer sales brochures.

Yesterday my dad and I went over to the Hershey Car Show which is likely the largest auto swap meet in the world. I picked up some new Bronco related literature pieces, including a 1969, 70 and 72 "Ford Light Truck color Selections" cards which have paint chips, names, codes and list what models they were available on as well as interior color codes.

Pinto Yellow was available on all light trucks in 1970, including the Bronco. Color code "D".

I also picked up some other paint manufacturer color chip cards of the Early Bronco era and yes, the names are not consistent.

If I can get the paint formulas in Spies I can do this in the next few months. Would LEBC or any other clubs out there be interested in sprayout cards? I have to make at least 3-5 ounces for the formulas to come out somewhat correct. 3-5 ounces is way more than enough to do 3-4 sprayout cards.

1977 "W" Paint?

I do not see a "W" on your list for a '77. The Marti Report for my 1977 Ranger has "W" paint code and says it is Medium Emerald. Judging by the color it is this seems accurate. The Marti Report goes on to say there was 827 with this paint code and 175 with these Paint/Trim Codes.
The Marti Report also says it was produced August 19, 1976. Could there be a carry over of color code "W" from 1976 since it was an early build? The green color of it is really bright.

Dennis (Fordfan): I did some more digging and still can not find a code "H" or Medium Copper listed for 76, but I have seen your rig and believe to to all original paint, so this is a curious one. As with parts however, there are often some inconsistencies and odd things done over the years on the production line. Maybe this is one of them?

http://www.fordification.com/library/main.php?g2_itemId=134&g2_imageViewsIndex=1

I also did not find it for 1975 since yours was an early production 76, made in 1975.

http://www.fordification.com/library/main.php?g2_itemId=6428&g2_imageViewsIndex=1

Where did you get the 'Medium Copper" name? I do not see the name or code listed on 75 or 76 car colors either?

When we saw it when my dad and I used your rig for making the patterns for the Explorer stripe kit, we really liked the color. The only other one I can recall seeing similar or maybe the same color, was Mac's Explorer. Maybe this was an Explorer only color option that is just not listed?

Luke, I have not been able to locate a 1977 Ford Light truck Colro Selections Card yet.

The 1977 Dealer Sales Brochure lists "Bright Emerald", but no "Medium Emerald".

The 1976 Color Selections card does not list "Medium Emerald", but does list "W" as "Medium Green Glow" which was a special option color. http://www.fordification.com/library/main.php?g2_itemId=134

I will see what else I can find out when I locate a 77 Color Selections card.

I have a 1977 PPG color chart. I took a picture of it and tried to attach it to this post but I can't or don't know how to do it. If you p.m. my your email I'll send you the picture. It shows the color codes with chips for a lot of trucks and vans, including Broncos.

For what its worth, my 1977 is currently green but the P.O. didn't spray the inside of the glove box. The code is "I" which I believe in 1977 was called Ford Medium Blue but looking on PPG site they give it the same code as "Bahamma Blue" from earlier years.
In my brief research I assumed that the Ford medium blue/Bahamma blue was correct. Let me know if you know of something different.

You can send the scan to me at drew(at)earlybroncos.com

I have some other paint chip pages from various paint manufactuers and various years.

I am looking at one now from American Parts, Rogers paint and it lists code "W" as "Bright Emerald" is it is also called on the dealer sales brochure.

This is why I have only used the names on the dealer sales brochures or the factory Ford light truck color selections paint chip cards. Many of the various paint manufactures used similar, and sometimes completely different names for the color codes.

Bahama Blue is listed in the 1977 sales brochure and is also listed in the Rogers Automotive Finished 1977 Ford Truck paint chip page as code "I".

I do not yet have the Ford light truck color selections cars for 1977, but am working on getting that and the other years I am missing.

It is hard to tell in the photo, but is that metallic?

Bahama Blue is not a metallic.

It also looks like some over spray on the tag in the upper left corner where it was not masked off.

Yes over spray for sure. I'm pretty sure this ol' girl has been painted a couple times in her life. Granted they were all lazy a$$ paint jobs with no removal of rubber seals or glass so I have many tape lines around doors and windows. What I'd like to know is, how do I know what color the top was originally? Can you tell from the VIN tag if the truck had a monochrome paint job from the factory. Paint lines tell me at one point my top was also blue. Thx Brad.

1. I am skeptical if the original color is what is one the inside of the glove box door due to the over spray.

2. No, the VIN gives no indication that I am aware of of the top color. The top was most likely Wimbledon White, unless your Bronco has the Special Decor stripe package option which allowed for a color matched top in 1977.

I would look closer, you can almost always find original paint in spots that were not painted during color changes in all but the most detailed jobs.

Look high up on the firewall under the dash, under the hood, under the door hinges, door seals, etc.

On the top, is the inside white or painted body color?

You can also always sand through the layers to see what comes though. If you are not ready to repaint just yet, just do it in a somewhat hidden location or a spot that is covered with another part.

I have started doing spray out cards. So far I have 1966-77 code G Chrome yellow and 1966-68 code J Rangoon Red.
I should be able to pull 60% of the formulas off Spies. Once I have a list of missing paint codes I'll call Spies and see what they can do.

The least I can make is 2 ounces, I have enough to do two cards. I'll make an extra set for LEBC or any other club that wants the extra set.

Allen,

What is the size of the card?

I had an idea to make a cool display we can set up at some of the larger events or like we had inside at the 40th at Carlisle.
