I need to replace my current battery and am thinking about getting an Optima, since they seem to be the latest and greatest in batteries. Should I go aheand and spend the extra $50 to get it or just stick with the normal kind? Pros/Cons

Get an optima. Believe it or not they have been around for quite some time. I have 6 years on mine and it still cranks strong. A guy in my 4x4 club said last night he finally replaced his last week after 8 years. You wont regret getting one.

My Optima has worked now for 12 years. Left my cooler plugged in overnight 3 or 4 times and flattened it each time.
Took a lot to recharge each time but its still going strong. Its worth the extra $$
Oh yeah , it won't leak if your Bronco gets tired and falls over %)

Falls over?? :) I vote Optima too. I've got a red top I've had for years in a car that ate batts previously. No problems.

Ok, you all sold me, Ill have to see if the local Sams has some since Ive got a membership there. It sounds like the red top is the way to go for me.

Check Costco! I got mine there. They had the red tops and the blue deep cycle (I went with blue because it can be recharged more times from dead than the reds, and my truck sits a lot).

Dual Costco reds in my Bronco, one yellow on the shelf waiting for a home. Maybe it'll go in the trailer.

I don't have an Optima yet but it is on my "need to buy" list. After hitting a massive bump in my BroncoII and having the battery get cut open on the Alt Then having to clean up all the acid that was spilled all over my engine bay made me really wish I had one. :(

Just something to watch for if going with the Marine Blue's. They're available in BOTH regular and deep cycle. It'll say pretty clearly on the label, but just wanted you to know what to look for. In case you wanted the deep-cycle, you wouldn't want to end up with a starting battery just because it was less expensive.

My vote goes for the gel cell batteries! Currently using two red tops in my EB.

Actually Optimas (and Exide and Pro-Comp) are NOT gel cell batteries. They use lead-acid electrolyte technology, but contained in a sealed, absorbent glass/foam mat and set in a spiral wind of mat and lead plates.
That's why they have the power and longevity of the liquid batteries, with the safety and security of a gel cell.

As an electric vehicle drag racer I can say Optima's are on the way out. When they went in to Costco myself and other dealers seen our warranty rates on them sky rocket. I blew six blue tops in one weekend. Replaced them with wet cells in the same application and had no problem. Optima is the reason why my drag bike went a 1/2 second slower for my official record, which has now been beat. My unofficial record still stands though. They were once my number one choice, now they don't exist as an option anymore. The batteries from 2 years ago still kick butt, but the new ones suck.

Optima's are AGM (Asorbed Glass Mat) batteries. There are tons of other choices on the market. Right now the Excide Orbitial seems to be doing well. The only problem is Exide manufactures their batteries for a price. Meaning they decide on a price, a profit margin, and then go buy materials. So once they have a following I fully expect to see their AGM's to go the way Optima did. The old adage don't eat the yellow snow applies. In other words you will get what you pay for.

Hawker Genesis, Trojan, M&K SVR (really Deka) and Deka/East Penn work the other way. Build a good quality unit, add a profit margin, and then give the consumer the price. They end up being more expensive, but well worth the investment. (i.e. most people would pay 10-20% more to upgrade from a Escort to a Expedition) You will be able to find these in the price range of the Optima's two/ three years ago. A tell tale sign of quality is if you look in new RV's and electric golf carts, 9 times out of 10 you will find Trojan batteries. In industrial applications you find Deka. You will never find Optima's, which would lower the cost of manufacture if they were used. So they are not being used for a reason.

The Deka Imitiadator is new to the market this year, and is quickly taking a chunk out of Exide's Orbitial, which says a lot when it is more expensive. Deka also is the biggest manufacturer in NA, and by far the largest manufacturer of AGM batteries. My shop formerly distributed InterState, Blue Star (Delphi), Optima and I currently distribute East Penn/Deka (my preferred), Trojan, Delphi, and BatCap batteries.

If you guys want I can see what kind of arrangements I can make for you to buy Deka's or Trojans through me, but pick up locally for you. I don't know if it is possible or not. But both companies are pretty flexible that way. I know I can in Canada for sure, but it will be a bit trickier in the US. If I can you might be able to get the better batteries at the same price as Costco's Optimas ( I don't know how much of discount I can get, presently my cost is over the Optima's retail price, but if enough people are interested, you never know) Thoughts?

Well that goes against conventional wisdom. I like that. Informative too. I just assumed by now that Optima was the way to go. Optimas are more readily available for now and are certainly superior to "standard" truck batteries.
We always have to have our minds open to new (and sometimes better) developments!

Northeast wheelers on line are also against them. Too many returns. A few local 4x4 shops stopped selling them because of too many returns. %)
