First run at fixing things
Okay - so I did some minor wrenching on the beast over the weekend. First thing I had to address was the oil leak. There was a nice slow leak right where the dipstick goes into the pan. It looked like the gasket, or sealant was all gone - pieces flapping around. I went to Advance Auto parts to see if a gasket or kit existed for the motor and was told that no gasket existed. Instead they advised me to strip away the remnants of previous goop and then clean the area really well with brake cleaner. Then they sold me a tube of sealant (kinda like RTV sealant) and advised me to apply several coats on all seams. I did this and after 4-5 coats it seems to have done the trick. I added a few more coats after the leak stopped and will probably add a few more in the near future. I drove the Bronco in to work yesterday and didn't see a single drop of oil after a full day of sitting in the parking lot - so that was good!
Then I decided to pull the radio out. Someone added a crappy old cassette stereo and I noticed that it still turned on, but no speakers were hooked up so I had no idea if it actually worked. It looked pretty bad anyways so I pulled it out and unplugged it. A little later I went to start the Bronco and noticed the electric fuel pump no longer was working. There is a little switch by the ignition switch and you have to manually turn on/off the fuel pump on this beast. Well crap – now what! I pulled out my phone which thankfully I had used to take pictures of EVERYTHING as you all have seen so far (still haven’t posted EVERYTHING yet – though I’m sure it seemed like it). Sure enough I had the attached photo of the fuse block and noticed the wire running into it. Well that red wire comes off the stereo harness and also is jumped to the fuel pump switch. GEEZ!! Well for now I stuck the wire back in place and everything works again, but that will be one of my next projects. The fuse block is ridiculously small. Will have to look at expanding or replacing it. Any suggestions? Also I noticed the horn doesn’t work. I pulled the old horn and tested it – seems to be dead so I bought a new one. I hooked it up but no go. Now I need to figure out where that disconnect lies. Sounds like next weeks’ project!
While I was working on the Bronco, my wife cleaned out the garage so we could fit both my Jeep and Bronco in there. Damn what a good woman! I am a lucky man!
