Steering Box Suggestions

After 28 years ownership of my 1971, I am due for a new, used or rebuilt steering box. I do most all my on work, but no experience in the steering arena outside of tie rods, drag link, trac bar, etc. I have just learned that my steering box is basically shot as well as my upper ball joints. I don't have a lot of expendable income and find myself turning to the forum for some feedback. I think the powersteering came out of a 75. I see several steering boxes on the market. Anyone having suggestions, pros and cons or general input is appreciated. Thanks

I have the borgeson box and it’s big and beefy with all new parts. Plus only about $500.

Yup....unless going rock crawling the Borgenson box will serve you well. I've been running one for years.

I am using the TBP steering box. I wasted alot of time messing with other "solutions". They were all things that needed help. However, one trip down the road with my EB and the new box and I was sold. Snow, ice and 4x4, front posi, rear locker and 37's and it drives great.

Probably the single best thing I did to my EB out of all the mods. I love driving it now.

Why do you think your steering box is shot? Water inside and hard crashes are about the only things that will make them unrebuildable.

Why can’t the borgeson box rock crawl?
Weakness. The Borgeson box is also known as the Delphi box and was designed for on road use. Think it came on Xterra's and the likes. Not what you would call a crawler. WH used to have a steering box guide that stated 33's and under for the Delphi box, If you crawl you put big stress on steering components. Most run the 4x4x2 box if doing crawling or ram assist.

I run the Delphi box with 33's M/T's and have no issues.

For your build, 4x4x2 box would be your best option IMO. Given the ZF5, NP205 and SD axles, you are clearly no stranger to scrounging parts, so get to scrounging. The boxes are getting a little harder to find cheap, but still seem to be out there, and the reverse rotation guts are dime a dozen. It should be the last box you ever put on your EB.

4x4x2 would be my choice. you can build it yourself after sourcing a donor 78-79 4x4 PS box.
