The stock 2 bbl is honestly the best, I've seen them run practically vertical and on their sides! If I didn't run that, I'd seriously look into efi as it will cure all of your carb/fuel related issues. I used to run an Edelbrock 1826 and it worked very well in all conditions after it was tuned properly (which wasn't too hard). It seems that Holly's can and do run well, but they also require a bit more maintenance and occasional tuning...

I run the Edelbrock Offroad Thunder AVS 650 on my 351. I love it for the current state my Bronco is in. My next step will be EFI, but the Edelbrock has been on my truck for 6 years now and have had no issues with it on the street. As far as offroad, it hick ups and burps just a little more than my 2 bbl did, but not much. For the money and how easy it is to tune and set-up I would do it again in a second..

I have the 470 TA on my 302, performer intake, rv cam. Had to go up one jet size in the secondaries which you have to order separately, other than that, flawless out of the box.

More people run the holley than the edelbrock personally I'd go with the 470 ot just a standard non TA holley. I've ran standard holley's for many many years with pretty much no issues.
A on stock 302 or even a slightly built one the smaller carbs tend to respond better than the 600 cfm and up carbs.

I'll put in another vote for the q-jet or, for less work, the Holley. And I'm an Edelbrock/Carter guy from way back.
Quite a few discussions here about whether to use the 470 (would be my choice) or the 670 (which is Holley's choice evidently) due to the 470 not being for a V8 or some such dribble like that, but either way, some like it, some don't. Some have good luck with it, some don't.
Most people (except for someone here just last week) love the q-jet if they go to the little extra trouble of adapting it.
The Edelbrock has my vote for easiest to tweak and tune and work on and basically twiddle with, but you usually have to really work at them to make them work even decently off-road. If yours is a street-only rig then, you might love the Edelbrock. If you go off-road often though, you might consider one of the others.

edelbrocks are great o flat ground, but they totally suck off road. I had no luck with the holley. Life has been good since the q-jet.

Everyone always says "edelbrocks suck offroad" but youre the first one to ever post experience with the AVS Thunder Offroad carb. Thank you. I also think a "what kind of wheeling do you do?" question has to come into play. I've always had good luck with Edelbrock carbs. I like that they are simple and you dont have to fool with them a lot. I've heard you can make a Holley perform better but personally I like to install a carb and forget about it. I purchased the same carb you have but havent finished my motor yet. I dont plan on rock crawling or anything too extreme. So hopefully it works well for me.
The last Edelbrock I ran had the offroad needles and it worked great. Even on inclines and going fast over rough terrain. So people that say blank statements like "Edelbrocks suck offroad" must be wheeling a hell of alot harder than me I guess. If I wanted the motor to run while my truck was upside down or on its side then I would just run propane or at least fuel injection.

Most people that complain about a carb cant adjust it. Messing with the air/fuel is hardly "adjusting a carb." When a manufacturer states that the carb is wet out of the box, they mean it will work but will still need to be adjusted to your settings.

My Holley TA 470CFM works great on my 302. a 670 is too much carb for a 302. I remember reading somewhere that a 302's maximum cfm rating is around 520.

I agree with most everything posted here.
470 is about right for a 302
670 is too big for a 302 even a bit too big for a off road 351
Edelbrock runs good on the street, don't even try to climb a steep hill or park on one, back up one, side hill one.
Holleys are very adjustable. Thats a good thing not a bad thing.
FoMoCo 2 barrels are really the primary side of a Holley and run great with little fuss but If you go to any parts store to get a rebuilt one that runs without any problems you will be taking it back for about half a dozen trades before you get lucky and find one. The 11 year old kid in Mexico that rebuilds carbs for the major parts suppliers don't have a clue how it works or why.
I don't have any experience with Qjets. A lot of intakes are square bore or spred bore specific. Some are both. You have to take that into consideration on cost of a swap.
