Intermediate housing double lip seal question

When I rebuild my C4 I also replaced the intermediate housing double lip seal because I had access. It wound up leaking transmission fluid into the transfer case and I almost burned up the trans.
I just pulled it again. I poured some fluid on top of the seal before I removed it and verified it was leaking.
When I removed the seal it just fell out and did not require me to knock it out.
The new seal can also just drop down into the housing vs needing to be driven in.
Does this mean my housing where the seal goes is spent or do these seals need to seal by me pounding them in and crushing them?
Or do I have 2 bad seals that are not wide enough for the housing?

It's the bearing retainer that is not tight enough to hold the seal. I hope o can buy a new one vs the $350 whole housing.

I found a new retainer on Wild Horses and ordered it for $38 plus shipping. I hope this was it.

If you just did this today, it won't ship until Monday anyway. If you have some dial calipers you can take some measurements with, we could compare to the new one to make sure.

I had the same problem with the seal spinning in the retainer. After checking with every parts supplier, Napa, Auto Zone and Jeffs Bronco Graveyard I found Wild Horses 4x4 had the correct seal that had the interference fit seat properly and not spin. My seal you could seat with by just pushing with your thumbs. If you get a new seal from wh try it in your old housing first.

I was able to measure 39.33 mm at the widest point but I was not able to get all the way down where the seal is. The seal was so loose the shaft turned it.
