Explorer EFI swap fuel pump problem

I have been working on the explorer efi swap and other eb related projects of and on for the past couple of years. I did the harness with Garry @EFI Guy help, and he did the ecm. I thought i had all the kinks worked out and then it wouldn't start. Turned out to be the fuel pump. It had zero miles on it but it has been sitting for a couple years. It's a bc broncos efi thank and their pump. I replaced it with a new wahlbro around Halloween I think. All was good. Now 4 moths later I went to start it and nothing. Fuel pump again. Fuse is ok, relay is working, I can trigger the relay with the power probe and nothing. I can put 12+ to the terminal on the tank and nothing. Any ideas? Could it just be bad luck? Could something be causing it to go out? I going to drop the tank this week. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you put the new pump in the tank of old gas?
Fuel pumps don't do well when stored in old varnished gas. They also fail quick if stored in a fuel tank that has moisture in the fuel. As long as it is used, a little moisture in the fuel isn't a problem, just stored.

I got rid of the old gas. Cleaned the tank and filled it about half way. That was about 4 months ago give or take. I started it a few times in that period. I really thought it was wiring or ecm related but I'm pretty sure I ruled that out. Unless I'm missing something.

That sounds like the right placement.
I think a lot of aftermarket fuel pumps are pure garbage, I carry two spares with me at all times although the wild horses EFI pump that's presently installed has been running for over a year now.

wahlbro is a great pump, if you can get a real one. Everyone goes looking for a "deal" and ends up picking up one of the counterfeits. There are so many counterfeits out, and they got really good at getting all the markings just right. Amazon, Rock Auto, eBay are all full of fakes.

The last couple of fuel pumps that I've purchased came from here:

Might cost a little more, but they're right where I can go yell at them in person if I have a problem. I haven't had one yet, and don't expect to.

I know that is a problem. I bought it from Kartek in hopes of getting a quality one.

Wahlbro fakes have been out for over a decade. I'm not even sure that anything these days with a Wahlbro stamping is real. My understanding is that the company was bought out by TI several years ago. I typically tell everyone to buy Bosch brand replacements. I'm not aware of any fakes and they are OEM for many German cars. I used to work on German cars and rarely replaced fuel pumps in them, and when I did it usually wasn't a Bosch pump.

did you use a fuel stabalizer like stabil?

Things I go big on quality, brtakes, anything I might have to replace and would be a real pain, , like fuel pumps, clutch, internal engine. OK, heck I go quality everywhere, I never want to touch it again.

I think i am going to go that route. I just need to figure out which one works best with my tank now.

I normally do the same thing. I did put stabil in it. Turns out that it was more my fault and not just a failure.

I solved the problem. I wasn't very thorough when I put this new pump in. I didn't inspect the inside well enough after I rinsed in cleaned it out. There was alot of rust sediment that was still in there. With the baffles, I didn't see it. I am going to switch to a bosch this time. I can even find the number from wahlbro anymore. I tried to get ahold of bc broncos to see what the original is that they used. None of their phones are not working. Are they still around?

I've been told that the famous Bosch 044 EFI fuel pump has been replaced by one with a different p/n. I've no idea what it is, but I wouldn't think it too hard to find.

Garry, as you know I’ve been using Aeromotive stealth pump with mixed results, although current one has been fine for 3 or 4 years now. My current set up is 2000 Explorer ECM and return less style rail with aeromotive fuel pressure regulator.

System no longer holds pressure reliably. It takes a couple cycles of the ignition to build pressure at start. It will hold 60 to 65 psi at normal temps but will fall low enough to stall engine at higher load / operating temps.

With Spencer soon to be driving this, i want fuel delivery to be bulletproof. I’m considering new tank, different fuel pump and sender arrangement. Intrigued by the Explorer, F150, or Mazda you mention in your video about the new poly tank.

What are your recommendations for my shitsuation?

I would use a Bosch replacement for a 2001 Explorer and the matching regulator mounted just above it in the tank. Ditch the Aeromotive regulator and return line. Just make sure that any hose you use in the tank is rated for submersible use.
I'm not sure what style of hanger you have now. If you swap to the poly tank I can confirm that the Explorer returnless pump hanger matches the A Tank bolt pattern. But I don't know how close the depth on it is.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Aeromotive, I don't know who owns them and I use one in the Mustang, never an issue with them. But I have less faith in the automotive aftermarket every day, especially when it comes to "performance parts". It seems that there are one or two massive companies that are buying up all the go-fast part companies that we used to trust. They have to answer to investors and count beans while the quality suffers because the owners don't know the difference between a piston and a radiator. Meanwhile, those same brands are cloned using slave labor with zero quality control. I try my best to stick to OEM manufacturers these days.
