Chassis Side Alternator Connector

Hi all, first time posting here (and on a forum in a long time!). Recently acquired a 1970, 302, 3spd manual and have been working through odds and ends. Have a question about alternator wiring connectors:

- are there any suppliers or recommendations to replace the stock 3 pin flat connector on the chassis side (without buying a complete harness)? Id like to keep it OE, but having trouble finding a heavy enough gauge (most are 16awg)

- if no, any recommendations?

Thanks!

Are you looking for the molded main harness connector that the alternator harness plugs into?
I suspect the only source will be to harvest one from an original harness with 6-10 inches of wire, and splice it into your harness.
That is a common Ford vintage connector, so any half century old Ford in a wrecking yard may have one.
A ClassicBronco member may have a take out harness they have replaced.

Hi all, thanks for the replies!

Im in santa clara currently, moved here from toronto four years ago.

@Oldtimer - yes exactly that connector. If theres anyone local in the bay area, that would be awesome.

Heres a quick shot of the truck. From what I can see, I'm the 2nd owner. Pretty well maintained truck, im trying my best to bring it back up to decent running shape.

Double check that. Your 70 probably has the chassis side connector with the heavy wire, running all the way up to the firewall connector behind the engine.
If yours is a very late 70 model, it’s possible you have the later model harness. But up until the 70 model, the main harness had two rectangular firewall connectors next to the throttle linkage.
I don’t know if anybody reproduces that. But with the popularity of Broncos, that kind of stuff pops up more often than ever before.
It’s easy enough to replicate, with different types of connectors. But getting an exact replica of the factory could prove to be a lot harder.
As was already mentioned, that type of connector is very common among Fords. The problem arises with trying to replace everything without splicing. Because every vehicle had a little bit of a different length of wire, and termination type of the wires at the other end.

With the main charge wire, you don’t want any second rate connections. You don’t want to compromise the capacity of that wire because it’s long and is extremely important.
It runs all the way through the engine compartment, under the dash, through the ammeter, and then back out through the firewall to charge the battery.

Good luck!
And maybe connect up with Oldtimer there and meet us over at Su’s Mongolian barbecue on El Camino sometime. 😁😉

DirtDonk i took a look at the loom and definitely have two bulkhead connectors at the firewall behind the throttle cables. Are there full engine harnesses available for pre 71/late 70 trucks around?

Seems like American Autowire, LMC, JBG, and some others had some factory reproduction under hood harnesses available. Not sure what years they covered though. Or if they’re even still available.

Try calling Nick at Northeast classic ford parts .. not sure if his new harness uses that connector or not .

Normally, I would think it would not. But it’s definitely worth a call.
I should have mine in hand on Monday, so I can give a direct report as well, once I open the box.

If it was for me, that’s at least as long as I’d wait. But when it’s for someone else…
Then again, I do often open the box right away when it comes to Wiring because I wanna touch it, look at it, smell it, stretch it out and read the wiring, and then wad it all back up, stuff it back in the box and put in the cabinet.

As suspected, it doesn’t have any of the OE type plugs. So you’re not gonna replace just the factory alternator side and hook it to the rest of the harness.
Everything‘s new, not everything is routed the same way as factory and all replacement connectors are the modern type.
Mostly weatherpack.

I just checked Clifford's harness that I removed. He is a 68 and I have both sides of that connector you are seeking.
I am not going to tell you that it is pristine, but it should work.

If you want to make a run down to Morgan Hill/San Martin you can cut out what you need.

PM me for contact info... Doug.

@santaclaracanadian ,
If you unwrap the harness back to the voltage regulator connector, you can unpin the orange wire from the connector, the BK/RD stripe wire ends at a ring terminal, and the only wire you will need to cut and splice to you harness is the 10 gage BK/YL stripe wire. This will minimize number of splices.

The BK/RD stripe wire might actually be BK/WH stripe in the harness (mine is).

Good plan, thanks!
