Building a bronco from the ground up, 95 percent new parts. I can’t see toms box being a “ special part” only being built for them. It looks like a Delphi unit but with just the 3 bolt holes. Anyone else sell that Delphi box like theirs? The Borgeson unit has mixed reviews, some say it fits some, say it doesn’t on the holes. What is a decent ratio 3.75?

Most go with a 4 turn box. I prefer the 4x4x2 boxes for their strength. West texas off road rebuilds plenty of em. The may have me on the shelf ready to go.

Delphi does make custom boxes for the Bronco vendors. They make parts for whoever is willing to buy them. Normally it is OEMs, but they will do it for anyone. It isn't a complete special steering box, it is an off the shelf 600 series design. Delphi custom makes them with different torsion rods (steering effort, amount of boost), ratio (they have a couple different ratios tooled up) input spline, and sector shaft spline. Boxes are drilled to spec as well. Delphi leased out one of our buildings at work many years ago. I knew a few of them back in the day.

The closest mix of junkyard parts will be a Nissan Xterra/Frontier box with a WJ sector shaft. I ran just an Xterra box as it has a larger sector shaft than the WJ/Bronco sized shaft. When you have issues with a steering box, often it is a bent sector shaft, so I kept the big one.

How hard are you planning to use the rig when done? Big tires and hard core off road? Or street and camping trips? If the latter, consider a Lares/OER box like I put on my '69. Seems to be a replica of the factory power box, but about 4 turns instead of 6. Bolts up to the frame perfectly, no new or enlarged holes needed.
