Fan Shroud, not looking like it will work with an Explorer dress

All the info I have collected and all of the previous conversions I have done, has had the Explorer fan half way into the shroud. This works the best for cooling.

The project bronco I am working on has a one inch body lift, so the Owner purchased a shroud from one of the Bronco Vendors designed for a body lift.
(I have cardboard on the brand new US radiator, no divots from putting the fan off/on)

This shroud doesn't look like it is going to work to me, the fan is not even in the shroud. To me this would work with a stock fan and spacer or a Foxbody Mustang front dress.
I am going to call the Vendor and chat with them about it, but I am already leaning towards someone else's aluminum shroud, that I know I will have to modify to fit.

Share your thoughts.... (Sorry for the poor picture) Doug.

Yes shroud is attached to rad, with a layer of cardboard between the rad and shroud.

We are looking at the fan/fan clutch not in the shroud at all... My picture was taken at the last minute B4 dinner and I never made it back out to the shop to do a better picture...

I would agree, Doug. That's not going to do much.

I used 1x1 aluminum tubing across the top and bottom of the radiator to mount my shroud and that spaced it good for me. I have a Champion radiator. I used some rubber strip down each side to seal up the side. It’s been perfect for 9 years so far.

Spoke with the Vendor, this is the only shroud they offer, stock body height or lifted.
They didn't seem to understand about the Explorer front dress being set farther back.
Owner will have to send this one back...

I called WH's and ordered their #5001 aluminum shroud, as I know that will work... I will post some pictures later this evening.

You could use about an inch more shroud.

Fun fact, the fan will pull more air if the tips are NOT in the shroud. While we think of fans as being axially flowing, there is a bit to be gained by having the tips exposed and allowing some radial flow off the tips. I've seen noticeable gains with nothing more than pulling the fan out of the shroud by as little as a quarter inch.

Maybe a better picture of Vendor X shroud, it only comes out about 1.5"...

Pictures from Clifford with WH's shroud. It will need material added due to the 1" body lift, as I did with Clifford.

I don'
Capt., I took a stock fan shroud and added 1/8 aluminum around to make up the difference.
I appreciate the thought... BI
The stock one wasn't provided.
And since I got the Pacemaker two years ago, I am not supposed to weld.
So that would mean taking it somewhere to having it done to Vendor X's unit. Who knows how long that will take or $$...
So it seems plan B with the WH's unit the best way to go.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice, I ended up having an extension built years ago locally. This is the one from the CB tech section made from aluminum and then added to the metal body lift shroud sold by vendors. Works well.

Technically, if you put the spacer between the shroud and the radiator it will pull better air from the corners of the radiator and cool better due to more even airflow through the core. I find making a square spacer easier than a circle one.

There's a fan clutch assembly that is longer for some Chevy application that works on the Explorer set up. I'll see if I can dig it up, but I've sold that Bronco and pretty sure I gave the folder of receipts with it.

EFI Guy responded with a PM saying a Chevy Trailblazer fan clutch would move the fan forward 1-2 inches, sound similar?

I
Learn gas welding? It's like TIG but with FIRE!
I first learned to weld with gas when I worked at Sears in the 80's ;). When Sears started doing exhaust work with the "Muzzler" muffler guess who got the nod. All we had was a torch set up for disassembly. Well, not everything just bolted together. I would run down to the laundry and borrow metal clothes hangers for welding material... Can anyone else say they learned to weld with a cutting tip?

@904Bronco When you're all done can you post a few pictures of how you modified the WH 5001 shroud for the 1 inch body lift? I've not had a shroud for 20 years and don't run hot, but have been thinking about adding a shroud.

Also how do you install said shroud? Do you pull the fan and then install the fan and shroud at the same time?
