See the 84 for the body code? What does it mean.

As Viper pointed out earlier, the second digit, 4, indicates a backseat was ordered.

I suspect the first digit, 8, is an indication of the "Special Ginger colored with random stripe" 72 Explorer Sport upholstery.

...Explorers came with seats color matched to the body and in 72 the colors were red, blue, or dakota tan. Dakota tan had brown interior instead of a direct color match like red and blue.

As with most things EB, "your results may vary".

The two interior colors were very close to each other. Not sure if the one would have been considered "red" by Ford at the time, but they could certainly have called their interior colors anything they wanted. Just like exterior colors.

Both were second-owner vehicles. Pics taken circa 1975/76
I know the interiors were not changed by the then-current owners, but now way to know for sure what the PO's had done in the two years each that they'd owned them. Likely nothing though.

summertown,
Dirtdonk, the pic of the tan bronco are the seats that I have.

I'm the third owner. The second owner got it some time in 77 or 78 at the local dealership, dad says. They worked together at Murray. I want restore it back to what the vin says and like you bought in new in 72.

R.P. Coltrane, is red, blue or light golden rod the only colors in 72 for the explorer sport? Do all three colors have the same color/style seats?

Is there anyone here with a 72 explorer sport that's red or blue? If so, does your vin have the "X"?

What are the odds of the first owner stripping it down to the metal, painting it green, replacing the door striker post sticker?

Will the marti report tell me who the first owner was?

Explorer interior trumped sport interior when the packages were combined. Explorers came with seats color matched to the body and in 72 the colors were red, blue, or dakota tan. Dakota tan had brown interior instead of a direct color match like red and blue.

My red one has brown int and a white dash like the one in Paul's pic
