New ignition switch

Hey All,
I am new to this so don't beat me up too bad. I have just picked up a 66 bronco and it has a painless wiring harness. I replaced the ignition switch from the one that was being used with a screwdriver to start it. I got the new one installed but I have lost my blinkers and when turned to start it will start but as soon as you let off so the starter motor quits it dies. Any suggestions? I did call painless earlier before wiring it to the switch and some of the wire colors didn't match the diagram so they told me what wire to put where.

Does the switch look the same as what you took out? It should be the same through all the years, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out that the first year Bronco got some oddball item in the early production days. Or that it lasted this long!
Of course, some PO could have changed it to something wrong too. Happens a lot.

Unfortunately though, it sounds like the switch is defective. That's not uncommon either these days it seems. But first do a few tests.
What else did you mess with during this replacement? Anything?
The blinkers don't have anything particular to do with the switch, other than it powers them through the flasher relay. But if the power to the flasher is out, it could be a fuse.
If the new switch is the problem for the blinkers, then a whole lot of other things wouldn't work either. Any other problems? With things like the heater or radio?

If you have it wired correctly, then the bit about it not running after you let off the START position sounds like the switch.
BUT, that's a big question mark right now, because you had to re-connect things that weren't right.

Even though Painless should be the go-to expert, maybe give us the colors you were dealing with, or even send me a picture of the wires and switch so I can post it up for you here.
Or if you're a computer using kind of guy, you can use one of the free image hosting sites and link to it here. You can't post pics directly to the forum unless you become a contributor for 13 bucks a year.

Good luck.
Oh, and welcome to CB too by the way!

Paul,

Thanks so much, the switch that was in it I don't believe was from a bronco. Unfortunately the guy bought the new switch I used and I believe that it is correct as it works with the spacer and I checked it by looks with one they had at wild horses. I will take a picture and send to you tomorrow. How do I send you the picture do you have an email I can send too? Your not the Paul that lives in Campbell by chance? I sold my old seats to a Guy today who told me about Paul who lives in Campbell ca. I am in Los Gatos.

Hey, yeah that's me. Or at least might be, as there are a lot of Broncos in our area.
I'm in West San Jose specifically, but near enough the Campbell border that I'm within the old Campbell territory from the "really old days" or thereabouts.
Who'd you sell the seats to?

You can send any pics to pabra1@aol.com and I'll post it up as soon as I get back to the computer. You can left click on our names to send e-mails or private messages, but I don't think it's as easy to send a pic that way as it is to just send it directly.

And since you're so close, keep in mind that on Mondays I do the old "South Bay Express" delivery service if you need any parts from Wild Horses that week.

But better yet, our local group of fellow EB'ers is going to be getting together within the next couple of weeks for a little food and talk. I'll keep your e-mail and let you know what plans develop.

We're on an e-mail group too, at bronco@yahoogroups.com and that's how we keep in touch and plan our gatherings and trade parts and info locally. If you're interested, go to yahoogroups.com and sign up for the bronco list.

Talk to you soon.

Yeah he was a guy named mark. He has a 66 red bronco just got a new axle from you I think. I bought new sets, console and a bunch of other stuff from Matt the last week. Your shop is great! Then thru soccer friends, I coached here in lG for years, I got introduced to Steve Pestana who told me to go here to help with problems. Is he apart of your group? He is apart of a group that gets together at St. John's Imbelieve, said they have 25-30 guys. This is great! I bought the family roll bar extent ion kit today at wH. Do you know someone around here who can weld that won't rape me? My email is nickvadasz10@hotmail.com

Small world for sure. Was on the phone with Steve just last night talking about whether we were going to be able to attend an event at Hollister Hills SRVA this month.
He's right around the corner from St John's so doesn't have to go far. We've been pushing about 30 at each gathering for awhile. They've been very accommodating of the large group, but we've been looking for someplace that might have even more room for us to spread out.
We had one gathering at the Round Table at Union and Camden a few years ago and I really liked that one. Big rooms in the back and BajaBronco (member here) brought some vintage Baja race movies we played on the monitor while we were discussing "world affairs" into the night. Fun stuff. And right in your neck of the woods too.

As for welding, I bet JimGo on NorCalBroncos.com could do it. I'll give him a shout later (I have some parts for him anyway) and see if he's got time anytime soon.
You'll love what he's putting together in his garage!

Let you know what I find out.

Here's an image of the back of his switch. Anyone see anything out of order at least visually? It's obviously not the newer painless harness because it's still using the GM color codes, but functionally should be fine.
Switch looks like a standard Ford type switch from here.

Here's the pigtail for that type of switch if you ever want to put it together more solid. Nothing inherently wrong with your method, as long as the crimps are good and tight, and the connectors are tight, but this is a good way too if you decide to mess with it. This way, the nut on the center stud not only holds the ACC wire in place, but also holds the entire plastic connector in place.

Oh, forgot to mention. Please confirm whether the Red or the White wires are the power-in from the battery.
Assumed it was the red one, but to assume with Broncos is to invite disaster!
