Had a leaky axle seal on a 1976 9" housing. Pulled it apart and believe its a SET 20 setup on a 31 spline axle. Ordered option #1. Bearing went on fine. Race would not fit. 20k press would not press it on. Same Timken part number that came off went back on,

I noticed there seem to be a few different options, an ID of 1.557 vs 1.562". Has anybody else ran into this?

Somebody please school me...

Hmm...all of the SET20's I have ever encountered had a Ø1.5625 nominal ID, though it's possible that they're publishing the ID of the retainer collar, not the bearing. FWIW, most name brand bearings tend to be pretty accurate given that they're ground 52100 alloy steel.

If you have access to a micrometer or calipers, what do the axles measure at the bearing journal?

Supposedly 1.564 or so (numbers from a friend with the press who has the axle shaft with him).

Bearing went on fine..

I've had the retainers to be high difficult to press on.

one note about the SET20, the retaining collar is 2x wider than collar for the sealed ball bearing retainer, so it is about 5x harder to put on. I've killed them in other ways but never had a SET20 walk out, makes my spine all tingly and ill thinking about all of the sealed bearings I've seen walk out.

The last time my 20 ton press had issues with a retainer install, I was pushing metal as in the retainer ID was too small and it was biting into the axle. I cleaned up the axle and bought a new retainer and it went on fine. Granted it was not set 20 retainers, it was on a Samurai axle but 20 tons of pressure should install a retainer unless something is bad wrong.
