Going with a wheelsmith custom 17 x 8 with 275/75 x 17 tire. I want the tire to fit nicely in the fender well. Going to post pics later of mockup with what have out of my parts stash lol. Thinking 4.5 is going to be ticket.

Fit nicely, as in “filling” the wheel well, or as in not sticking out?
What kind of fender well? Running stock, uncut fenders? Cut and flared? Metal stamped flares?

Not sticking out. Cut fender well with plastic flares same size as the fiberglass flares.

Offset is measured in millimeters and referenced from the theoretical centerline of the wheel, so in Shimmy's case above, a 9" wide wheel measures 9" from bead to bead, but approximately 10" from lip to lip. A Ø17x9 wheel with 5" backspacing would have 0mm offset, but since his have -12mm offset, where negative offsets move the mounting pad of the wheel closer to the inner lip of the wheel, you can convert by taking the difference once you've homogenized the units to match...12mm equals .47", so 5.00" - .47" = 4.53" BS.

Or the simpler method these days would be use one of the online tire/wheel configurators (previously linked to), but it's always good to understand what it's doing IMO, otherwise you might get garbage information.

I'd post pics of mine, but my F150 axles are 6" wider than stock, so they do not apply.

Just learning about offset, my friend is a walking tire/wheel calculator.

What's your lift/tire size? Any issues with the 17x9 and 4.03 backspace? This is the setup I'm thinking of going with for the wheel smiths.
I post some pics of 15 x 9, 3.5 BS. I HAVE FLARES, 2.5 suspension and 1 inch body. What size tire?

Put -12mm in the offset converter. Comes out to 4.03" backspace.
This is correct

"0" offset is not centered compared to back spacing. -12 is always centered for back spacing regardless of wheel width. in an 8" wide wheel -12 is always 4" back space, 10" wheel -12 is 5" back space, 7" wheel -12 is 3.5" back space. The calculator that @Glass Pony posted is the right tool for calculating back spacing from offset.
