    Melting Wires

Thanks for your help and advice. I’ve learned a lot in the past few weeks; stuff I’ve really never thought about. Now, that I’ve taken the old out, I would feel pretty good about doing it myself. It’ll be nice to have it professionally done though, and have peace of mind.

    Melting Wires

Update: Got the harness un-taped and there is collateral damage. I've removed the engine harness and the rear harness. I still have the dash wiring to remove. I've found a local shop that can do the install and they wanted to use the American Wire harness because of the flexibility in routing...

How do the 2 rectangular plugs at the firewall In the engine wiring harness disconnect?

Thanks Paul, I'll get the harness un-taped and have a look. I appreciate all of your insight.

    Melting Wires

The alternator harness was in pretty bad shape, probably by previous wire routing and 50 years in the elements. I think you mentioned the ground wire was original, so there have been issues before. The rest of the wiring on the truck appeared to be in decent shape. I had actually taped a...

    Melting Wires

Fusible link looks like it's been fat and happy all this time. On vacation while Rome burned! I'm referring to the ground wire that went to the engine and underneath the starter relay (the melted ground wire) as causing the short with the black/yellow wire, not the one from the alternator to...

    Melting Wires

Dead on Paul! Fusible link wire looks like a larger gauge wire on the outside, but inside is a smaller version (4 gauges smaller I think?) that literally melts off when a wire is overloaded. It burns out before the rest of the wire has a chance to overheat. Basically a bit of sacrificial wire...

    Melting Wires

I unmounted the alternator to get a better look. The melted ground wire attached to the engine block did terminate under the starter relay. Would this be my engine to body ground from the factory? I believe what happened was the black and yellow charging wire shorted against the ground wire...

    Melting Wires

I appreciate your insight. I'm going to take a closer look at everything, but I haven't really seen any blobs or melted insulation. I disconnected the battery as soon I could get stopped, probably 15 seconds from start to finish. You hit the nail on the head, I am cringing at the thought of a...

    Melting Wires

There is no engine-to-body ground on a Bronco in the factory harness. That is except the tiny little 20ga or so wire between the alternator and the regulator. It's buried in the harness from the alternator and only shows up near the regulator where it's attached at the mounting screw. There...

    Melting Wires

No, its between the mounting bracket of the starter relay and inner fender. It is not attached to any terminal on the starter relay.

    Melting Wires

I hope not. What about an auto electric shop? Is this a repair they could possibly make? You can certainly continue to inspect it and remove tape to see what is buried, but it looks like enough damage was done to come back and bite you later on if you just replace that one wire. l’ll take...

    Melting Wires

This melted wire is under the bolt that attaches the solenoid to the inner fender circled in the next pic. The rectangular connectors at the firewall. Under dash wire Before I start taking things apart to look closer, where should I check voltages with it running? I appreciate everyone's...

    Melting Wires

Where should I check the voltages at other than the battery?
  16. Blue1969

    Melting Wires

Yes you can replace just single wires. How hard or easy it is will depend on the individual wires, where they melted, and if that melting affected any adjacent wires. I'll try to get a picture of the damaged wire under the dash too. What's the best way to access the under dash wiring, remove...

    Melting Wires

Thanks! No blown fuses. I did move the voltage regulator out of the way to do some inner fender painting, but didn't undo any connections there, other than the ground. What do you mean by replacing the entire circuit, the wire from beginning to end, or does this include all components...

    Melting Wires

It’s definitely wire, I believe its the main 12 gauge charging wire. I don’t think I have a body ground. I will try to get better pictures tomorrow. The ground going to the block was melted, as was a the wire under the dash. Not sure if it was tight or clean, I haven’t messed with it since...

It was stock. After looking closer today, the ground to the block had melted insulation too. There was a wire under the dash melted too. How do you replace single wires like this in a harness?
