Anybody ever replaced the rear main seal on a 170 straight six without pulling the motor? Is there enough clearance to remove the oil pan and do it without sliding the transmission back?? Thanks!

I’ve done it once. Still had the original rope seal in there and it came out pretty easy. Putting the new one back in proved difficult to get right, and it ended up still leaking. Getting the oil pan gasket correctly placed was just as frustrating.

I’d probably pull the engine if I were to do it again.

Hi, I guess it would be possible but a major issue is the crank will not lower when you loosen the bearing caps with a 3 speed tranny.
I would pull the engine and plan on a new clutch, and probably some other work anyway.
Get a Ford or Chiltons manual because the job is not self explanatory.
Good luck

You can do it...you need to jack the motor up (remove motor mounts and then rest motor on some blocks of wood) to pull the oil pan off (oil pan cannot be removed with out motor being jacked up).....I installed a 2 piece neoprene seal and dabbed some gasket maker #4 on the ends and let it set overnight....never had one leak doing it that way....I used gasket maker #4 on the pan gasket too...never had leaks...let it set over night....
Ive changed main bearing from the bottom like that before too.....way easier then pulling the motor....good luck with your repair......

I replaced the rear main on my 200 cid, inline 6, but I did it by pulling the motor. It wasn't that bad and it was sooooo much easier to work on with it on a stand than laying on my back fighting everything. Perhaps not what you wanted to hear....
