So as a lot of you know and saw, we had an classic auto auction here in Greenboro, NC over the past few days. Ive known about it for months and have been keeping an eye on this little 66 since it was listed in the inventory. I decided that I at least needed to get a bidders pass just in case any of the broncos ended up going cheap. I kept looking at the pictures of the 66 everyday for what seemed like eternity waiting on the auction. The week finally arrived and I got to go check it out on Friday and lay eyes on it for the first time. When I saw it in person it was even better than I expected. Its a super solid bronco and doesn't have any signs of rust or any rust repair. It has been painted and is a little brighter than Wimbledon white and it also has a little bondo in it. It does present pretty darn well tho! Of course at an auction you can't drive it or anything and I had to wait until it was heading to the auction block to hear it run so I just checked the fluids and stared at it trying to come up with a price I was willing to pay. Saturday came and I got to the auction and stared at all the broncos for a few hours. There were a couple members from here there and a few other people I knew wandering around so it was almost like a car show in which all the cars were for sale. We all stood around and chatted about broncos and whatnot until the broncos started rolling. Of course we watched em all drive down the isle listened to em run and checking for leaks. When they finally came up to the block I told my buddy my number and he knew to tackle me if I started to exceed it. It sure was a stressful 2 minutes of my life but ultimately I came out with the top bid and won the truck for $1000 less than my maximum. Got to bring it yesterday after they got my paperwork all squared away. Of course I had to drive it around and get some pics as I like to do shortly after I get something.

Yes, first smog pump on a Bronco I ever saw was a friend's Red '66 he bought in about '75 or so. So likely a CA issue.
I really like the original CA commercial license plates too! Do what you can to keep them, even if it means paying the higher commercial cost, rather than the "passenger car" price.
Are you in CA too bug?

Now I have to go back and check out all the photos. Just wanted to comment on the plates. Regular plates would have had six digits in two groups of three, starting with three letters and ending with three numbers. While commercial got six also, but in three groupings with at least in some cases, the single letter first as you have.
Broncos back then could have been registered in either type. Not sure who decided that, or if it was due to it being a "pickup" model. Or strictly buyer's choice?

A big "assumption" on my part is that the reason my '68 has Blue '70's plates (swapped around the '71 model year based on the numbers) was that at some point one of the PO's did not want commercial plates and the higher costs, so re-registered it as a passenger car, or light utility vehicle rather than a truck.
I may never know, but it sounds reasonable anyway.

I did not know that about the cali plates! Thanks for that detail. I am in North Carolina so I won't be able to run the rear tag but I will keep them around and they'll remain with the truck as long as I have it.

Sounds good. I like the period correct-ish license plate frame too. Didn't do a search, but I wonder if that dealer is even still in business after all these years?
Probably not, as many have come and gone long before the current struggles.

Looks like about as original as a Bronco can be after all these years. The usual changes, but still laid out pretty much as Ford intended.

Neat Bronco. I enjoyed it when it came thru here. I looked for the cluster today but remembered the guy I got it from only had the carb and alternator - I did bring to his attention that the cluster was incorrect in hopes to get a better price which didn't work! Glad it's in good hands!

Congrats, the 66's are special. I found a cluster in my parts bin yesterday if you need one.

Just ordered the first parts for the 66. Got all the reproduction parts from Marti. Heater Hoses, battery cables, smog belt, fan belt, radiator cap and hose set, spark plug wires, fuel line and voltage regulator.

All that should tidy up the engine bay pretty well. I still need to get a washer bag tho. Gonna call SMS in a bit and see if I can order a seat cover.
