Can anyone take some pictures of a 1976 Calif Bronco engine compartment with all smog equipment installed. Thank you. Mark in San Diego; Beach City Broncos.

Hey Mark. I'm not sure if the shop's '76 was a CA Bronco originally or not, but hopefully it's still stock under the hood. I know they've "tweaked" a thing or two lately, but for the longest time they were trying to keep it all stock.
Pretty sure it did NOT have an air pump, but not sure if CA EB's in '76 had them or not. I know that particular component had an intermittent presence on EB's over the years.

Are you looking primarily for componentry, or for hose routing?
If I can't find any pics on my computer I can take some more Monday. There are some posted here on the forums though, because we've discussed it over the years.

The one I am working has a smog pump and I need to see which pulleys tie together. Which belt to which component in which pulley groove.

The pictures 904 posted of the '77 are the same for the '76. You'll need a two groove pulley on the alternator along with the belt.

It's cheaper to just buy a new alternator than to try and find the pulley.

Go ahead and ask questions, I recently went through smog on my '76. Some info on my build thread.

Paul, the last time I looked at the wildhorses4x4 '76 it had the bracket that held the smog and alternator. It did not have the smog pump on the bracket.

The later smog pump engines have their own specific cast steel alternator bracket, their own specific water pump, their own specific pullys. Watch out for missmatch parts. Allot of this depends if the origional dso was California. If you have the origional drivers side valve cover emission decal it wii tell you what the engine was set up for.

The vin# should tell you the DSO that the '76 was sold through. My '77 was an Ill. DSO so it had no air pump or what Ford called Thermactor. A Cal. DSO likely required the air pump and other special CARB emissions equipment. It's always bothered me that there are no photos of stock engine compartments on Classic Broncos. Classic muscle cars are expected to be restored to original condition, so there are plenty of parts and photos to help with restorations. This made me nuts when I had a '70 Ram Air 428 CJ Cougar Eliminator. I really wanted to hot rod that car, but had to keep it stock to get top $.

There's plenty of stock engine compartment photos. It's just that they're buried. Perhaps it would be a good idea to create a stock engine compartment photo thread, but I think we're pretty close to the end of the line for anything stock anymore.

And, why would a Bronco be any different than a F100, as an example. /QUOTE]

Back when they were specifying emission controls on Broncos there were allot of different requirements based on vehicle weights. Like the Catalytic converters were not on the Bronco in California when the cars in California got them in 1974. Trucks got them in 1975. and 49 state cars got them in 1975.

The stupid state of California leads the way to making government controls a real pain in the ass.

I've heard that Ca. is pushing the year required for smog checks forward a few years? May not be in effect yet? PS-I heard it awhile back from the local smog station...
Anyone else know of this?

As stock appearing EBs become more rare the value goes up. Tirewater's photos are a good example of the stupidity that prevails in Cal. They don't even vaguely resemble the new '77 I bought in '77. Now I hear Cal. wants to secede from the US. I think we should give the state to Mexico. That would be fun to watch.
The Cal. version of the last years engine compartment, in EBs is truly a nightmare. I pity anyone who has to deal with that. For those in free states, a series of engine compartment photos would help. These were truly capable go anywhere trucks that lazy recent owners don't even attempt to repair. Instead they go to speed shops to buy cheesy bling, and are surprised when the truck won't work for any porpoise.

Does anyone know where I can buy the heater hose/vacuum fitting that threads into the intake manifold? Also the injection tubes that bolt into the heads. The ones I have are blown out(internal valves). Mark in San Diego

Some more fun...

'75 had more emissions equipment, but '75 isn't tested in CA.

At my smog test the technician went over:

-Timing 8 degrees +/- 3
-EVAP inspection + vacuum test
-Gas cap test
-EGR visual
-Smog/thermactor visual
-Catalytic converter visual
-Heat pipe visual (air cleaner to pass. exhaust manifold)
-VIN check
-Smog test

A referee would be more thorough.

The unleaded fuel restrictor photo I posted is no longer needed for CA.

I bought the AIR tubes from Rockauto. They were relatively inexpensive. Look in the emissions section for '76 Ford Bronco on the Rockauto website.

Keep in mind, the smog/thermactor check is a visual check. It doesn't get tested.

I have not heard of this. If you have more concrete info on this I'd love to hear about it though.

While I understand and support CA's desire to limit emissions , I'm also interested in post 1975 vehicles that I would prefer not to smog. So as usual I'm stuck in the middle. Understanding of the laws, and in some scenarios wishing it did not exist. It's always interesting for me to read these threads on the message boards though, people that live in other states laugh at our emission laws but do not have the sheer amount of cars on the road as we do, packed as tightly as we do. And unfortunately you have to put a cut off somewhere...sucks for us that it was 75. But if the law serves to deter folks from moving here, that's always also ok with me! Thanks for making our roads one car lighter!

I could write a book about getting a 1989 Mustang motor smog legal to be in my former 77 Bronco. A "few" trips to the smog Referee, so many that he gave me his cell phone#

And you cannot argue with them at all... Whatever the books says is not debatable.

But in the end I won!

Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, motorcycles, trailers, or gasoline powered vehicles 1975 and older.
Smog Information - DMV - State of California
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/vr/smogfaq

There have been a few attempts to change this law and allow the exempt years roll forward up to 1981. Last year there was a bill for a one time fee of $200 paid to the state to to stop bi-annual testing for vehicles up to 1981. It did not seem to go anywhere... Currently it is still 1975 and older vehicles do not need a Bi-smog test...
