I have a 1977 Bronco Ranger that is not firing. I intend to check the coil and the "brain box". I was curious to know if anybody has info on anything else that might be causing this. The engine does turn over. Anybody have info on easy way to check coil or "brain box"?

Thanks,

You can check the coil and distributor with an ohmmeter. The module is not so easy.

Coil: 1-2 ohms between the positive and negative terminals and about 8K ohms between either of those and the high tension terminal.

Stator: 400-800 ohms between the orange and purple leads and more than 70K ohms between either of those and the black lead. The black lead should have continuity to the distributor body (ground).

No. The coil and distributor also need to be unplugged when you measure.

Is there an easy way to tell if I have a Duraspark II or a Duraspark III ignition system?

If it's original and has the blue plastic strain relief on the module it's duraspark II.

From what it looks to me, the whole system has been replaced. What do you mean by strain relief?

There's a piece of plastic where the wires go into the module. What color is it?
