Are they pretty much the same as a 78 bronco? I just picked up ine that is very straight and runs great. I'm going to build if for my daughter.

What is a good source for a AOD trans to bolt to the Dana 20?
It currently has a 4spd with granny but I want an auto for it. I do not want the 4r70w which is what I have in my 75 bronco. It works well but too.much electric crap.

Thanks
B

Wheelbase on your pickup is 117" vs the 78'/79' Bronco is 104".

Wikipedia says AOD came in 1982-1993 Broncos, and 1980-1993 F150s. I'd try to find one of those with 4wd and get the transmission and transfer case. Then you should be able to source driveshafts from whatever year donor they came from.

Agree with that. For once the transfer case can be a decent donor/swap.
Your F150 does not have a Dana 20, it has either an NP 205 or an NP203 transfer case.
Does it have locking hubs?
What’s the shift pattern on the transfer case shifter?

Either way, it’s possible that the bolt pattern is the same for the transmission and transfer case, but I think the later model transfer case might actually be a better choice.
For once…

If you have the 302 motor I have a very nicely custom built AOD/dana 20/twin stick setup for sale.

Since it sounds like a four-wheel-drive, the only engines that would’ve been available originally from Ford would’ve been either the 351M, or the 400.
Using the same bellhousing bolt pattern as a 460, so think about that when sourcing transmissions.
Not sure about the engine mounting however, but I’ve heard it’s fairly straightforward. Compared to trying to swap in a 460 which requires engine mount adapters.

It currently has a 351. I assumed it was a Windsor but now realize it's probably a 351m.

The shift pattern is a H pattern
I am.picking it up today so I willknow more.

Don't be surprised if your thread finds itself moved to the Off Topic area, since it is not an EB.
Not really a problem as many here of us here like all forms of Ford products ;).
I have really appreciated those who have chimed in on my 79 Bronco project.

You can use a kit like below or something similar. I don't believe Ford built and AOD with the specific bolt pattern needed.

I agree I don't think an AOD in that bolt pattern exists from Ford. Your easiest swap would be a C6 but it won't get you over drive. Like someone else said it probably isn't a dana 20 transfer case, it should be a NP203 or NP205. The C6 was a factory option and will bolt up to the NP transfer cases. I believe the E40D will bolt up as well but it is electronic.

So they never had non-electronic overdrive behind a 460?
Well, that sucks!

Easiest/best OD auto swap to go behind that 351m or 400 is an E4OD with the 1356 t-case they were often mated with. You could pull them together out of any late 80s/early 90s 4x4 truck that had a 460. Yes, its an electronically controlled trans but controllers are easy to find and easy to hook up.

I have a '78 F-150 4x4 shortbed and a '78 Bronco.

Well that answers that question, thanks bmc69, It is available... Now how easy is it to find?
I would rather have something bolt up without an adapter like in the link I posted, Others have done this for various applications, but I feel that you just remove points of failure.

PM sent to reach out, X2 on NO D20 xfer case in that 77, yes on a NP-203 or NP-205 xfer case. Time to crawl under and find the tag on the front of the xfer case.

E40D can be updated with TransGo kit. Huge and reliable transmission that can handle tons of torque. I think my buddy's '97 F-150 trans held 17 qts of trans fluid.

My '78 F-150 has the 203 FT case....my '79 Bronco has the 205 PT case. The latter is indestructible...

Anything 1977 F150 and up should be a married NP203 or NP205 as stated above, noting that I've run into way more of NP205's in my day. FWIW, my '77 F150 longbed came with an NP435/NP205 and has always been super reliable in that regard, even after owning it for almost 30 years myself. While I have a spare trans and t-case from a parts truck I picked up, I've never had to use either one of them.
