Hello all, as you can tell I’m a newby and am about a year into a frame off ’72 resto-Mod project and promise I’ll start a build thread on soon. My goal is a daily driver with a M5OD – R2 coupled to a 205 which I already have in. I thought I could get by with my 302 but it needs .060 over to restore it and I’m concerned with overheating. So now I am considering just going the 5.0 explore swap route. I have access to a 1999 explore for a possible engine swap. I can get a running drivable 1999 explore for $700, I have the axle sold for $200 so I’m $500 into the complete engine, wiring and anything else I may need. I have read extensively on what it takes to do the swap and I think I’m up to it. My questions would are; would it be best just to swap all components including PATs from the explorer to my bronco or swapping the engine and going the dizzy and mustang harness and computer route. Has anyone handled the PATs on a swap? I have read most threads on here and other sites but if there are some that call out this specific swap that I may have missed, please point them out. Any help is greatly appreciated. Addintional info is I am trying to do this on a budget of $1500. Can I do it? Thanks.

The common thing to do is just disable PATS at the ECM. EFIguy can do that.

Since you can get the entire vehicle at that price it's very do-able for your budget. Check out the link in my sig line, it may answer some questions that you didn't know that you had yet.

Alright, it seems pretty straight forward and a challenge all in one. I plan to start pulling the engine and components after Christmas. After reading a few threads, I plan to try the wireing harness my self. Any help pointing me to a 1999 explore wireing harness and pin out on the connectors would be appretiated. Thanks in advance.

Since you will be sending the ECU to EFIguy for a flash, ask him for the pin out for a 99'. He sent me one for my 96', but all model years are different. I'm starting another 96' right now, lucky for me it's the same as the one I just did last year.

Thanks Garberz, I'll do that. I was just trying to get started on the harnes while I wait on the PCM. How are you likeing the '96 swap, did you keep it all stock? Any pointers would be appretiated. Thx.

Huge difference from my stock 302. Probably double the HP. I kept it all stock, right down to running the Explorer exhaust manifolds. Mine is a trail truck that I use as a daily driver. I drive it on the fwy, I drive it to events, I drive it 300 miles on the fwy to an event, then I drive it home. It runs flawlessly. 100K miles on my motor. The best suggestion I can make would be to put the motor in and run it. It's rated @ 208 HP, it runs so efficiently, it will be a night and day difference.

That's awesome. And great looking rig you have there. I'm soooo looking forward to driving it. It's a lot of work to rebuild one but it will be a fun ride when done. Thanks again.
