I have done a little research and I am confused. So my 1972 bronco with a 170 is down with engine problems. I have access to a free 1965 200 out of mustang. Is the bellhousing pattern the same? All the mustang/falcon pages have me confused.%)

So will the 65 200 bolt in place of the 1972 170?

Should be the same. 200 bell bolt pattern changed around '81 but earlier ones are same as 170.

I am not sure check out fordsix.com and classicinlines.com they are all about the Ford six. Lots of information and very experienced members on the forum, a good resource for six cylinder owners.

From the casting number I found on the block I should be good to go. Should be the same pattern as my current 170

All small six falcon patterns are the same EXCEPT the 250 has the small v8 pattern and later 200s have a dual pattern that uses some of the bolts of the early and some of the v8 where both should fit.

I learned the hard way, I purchased a 65 200 block had all the machining done before I found out that the bolt pattern did not match. There are two bolt patterns on 170/200 ford engines big and small. All 1966 and newer blocks are dual drilled for both patterns. Automatic transmissions always take the small pattern, standard transmissions from 1967 on use the larger bolt pattern. The big difference is the top two bolt holes. Do your self a favor and check the engine in your Bronco.

I found out the hard way also. I bought a 170 that came out of a 1966 falcon to replace the 170 in my 1969 bronco. I didn't find out until all the prep work was done and engine was on the cherry picker that the bell housing bolts didn't line up with the engine. The whole thing was a huge headache wish i would of done more research. I don't know why ford would do this.

200

Probably will need the later years. They are better anyway, better head design and larger carb. Check picnpul and other wrecking yards you can still find the 200 or car-part.com. If going to swap engines look for the 250 also a bit more work than the 200 but more torque.
