$20K to paint the bronco?

I was getting an estimate on painting the mustang's bumper and asked about painting the bronco. The guy said at least $20K, even if bring in the tub, doors, etc. I asked him about just spraying it without all the frame off work and he said it would still be about the same price because they blah, blah, blah.

I think I got the "we do easy current vehicles and don't want to mess with your old rig" price.

Thoughts?

He may have been giving you a high quote to get rid of you. What kind of shop is this, do they mostly do new collision insurance work?

I get the same thing here in Podunk.

So it's either go broke painting it, paint it myself, or go across the border into Mexico. I have seen some of those paint jobs and you can see the grit marks where they sanded it pretty rough.

For an average job I've gotten quotes of 3500 from average paint shops and 8k for nice base/clear show jobs. May vary from location to location, but 20k....no way

What part of the country?

Is this a paint job or a rust repair, bodywork, shape fit, put together, take apart, paint and rebuild project?

Most body shops don't even know how to shape and fit metal. They remove the replacement fender for your 1993 Grand Am from the box, scuff it, paint it with the premixed paint, and bolt it on. It fits where it fits, and looks the way it looks.

Did the quote include taking it down to bare metal, doing all rust repairs/panel replacements, ensuring everything aligned razor sharp, and laying a show quality paint job?

I was looking at a Bronco that was mechanically what I want, but needed some paint work. The existing paint was in bad shape due to a shoddy paint job. Based on a bunch of pictures and videos, I was quoted a "minimum of $8,000" but "could reach $15,000 or even more easily."

This was from a reputable shop that does work on restoring older cars.

My 73 had a crappy paint job when I bought it and I had it repainted for $2,000.00. Now I have a less crappy paint job and got what I paid for, unfortunately!!!

Don't take it to him,it's his way of saying "take it somewhere else".I would say I prolly have somewhere between $1200 - $1500 in material and I did all the work myself.I might have that much in brand new panels and time doing the rust repair,so my advise is run away fast!:eek:
