I've got a 68 Sport in restoration that I thought had the original 289. It also has a 4bbl Carb. After I got into the engine I found the engine casting code was C8AE with 302 cast into the lifter galley. I decoded this is as a 302 block, 1968 Full Size Ford, date coded November 67 (7L29). The heads are stamped 289 in the valve spring area with a casting code of C8OE which I decoded as 1968 Fairlane heads, date coded December 67 for the respective heads (7M15 and 7M24). The book I have also noted that the engines would typically be cast the year prior to the model. I'm not sure if this is the original engine but all the dates work with the VIN that shows the Bronco built in February 68.

The problem I'm having is the crankshaft that has a casting of M with an X slightly below it on the front throw. The book indicates that for a 302 it would be cast with a 2M or a code similar to the engine and head casting in that area. On the second throw there's a C4 cast mark and in another location on that same throw, there's a D4. I'm trying to find out of this is a 289 or 302 crank that I understand is interchangeable. Any other ways to tell if this crank is a 302 or 289? I'm not sure exactly how to measure the stroke that would also tell me what it is.

The journal sizes are the same for both 289 and 302. The difference is the throw or offset of the rod journals to the centerline of the crank. Easier to measure if it's still in the block. 289 has 2.87" of stroke, 302 has 3.00".

Check the code on your rods if they're 302 it's more than likely a 302 crank. 302 rods are shorter to account for the longer throw. If they're Boss 302 rods they're the right length for a 289 crank and you got lucky!
