Dropped the transmission and tranfer case out of my 73 to replace the gaskets and while I had them out I replaced the clutch etc with a new clutch kit (pressure plate, clutch, throwout bearing, pilot bearing) and had the fly wheel turned. Threw it all back together and now the transmission will not shift.Additionally, it seems the clutch will not disengage (im guessing the two are related). The clutch fork has very limited play when I attempt to manipulate it. Im gussing im gonna have to drop everything again, but i'm not sure exactly what the issue is.

I didnt even open the transmission up, just cleaned it up and painted it. I ensured it remained in 1st gear from thr moment I pulled it, and I'm pretty sure thats what position its stuck in.

I tried starting without the drive shafts in and it almost turned over, but i'm afraid i'm gonna fry the starter.

Trasfer case seems to work fine, as I am able to move the yokes when dissengaged.

Any Ideas?

I left it in 1st when I pulled it and was especially careful not to knock it out of gear.

Sounds like you have something bound up. Did you use a clutch alignment tool? Did the trans slide right in or did you pull it in with the bolts? The engine won't turn over?

The tcase yolks will spin free it the tcase is in neutral.

Used the clutch alignment tool and the transmission slid in pretty effortlessly and then I bolted it in. The t-case was a pain, since I did it alone. there was a small gap between the adapter and trans initially, but once I tightened the bolts it closed up.

The engine almost starts occasionally. Essentially its like trying to start it in first gear with out depressing the clutch pedal. Mostly can just hear the starter jolting against the fly wheel

Couple things come to mind. If you didn't have the shifter locked in gear the tail shaft could have pulled out with the transfer case removed. That isn't good.

The other is putting the clutch disk in backwards. Usually a little sticker that say's "flywheel side". Flip it over and it won't disengage (or engage) correctly.

Pulled everything out again and I discovered two seaparate issues:

1) the output shaft of the transmission did pop out

2)when clipped into the bell housing the clutch fork lacks the range of motion to depress the fingers on the pressure plate. Is it possible I have the wrong clutch fork or bell housing? The truck drove fine, with clutch chatter, before I dissassembled it. Its the same clutch fork as before. Is it possible the clutch fork was not clipped in and the input shaft routed through the throwout bearing was the only thing keeping the clitch fork in place? Would that even work?
