I have a 3-on-tree in my 77 and 3 on the floor in my 70. The PO made the change on the 70 and he cut a hole I can stick my foot through to do it.
The only way I would change off the tree is for a 5-speed. Save your cash, think of the money you would drop on you floor shifter as a down payment on having more forward gears.
I think the duff shifter is the only way to go. They shortened the shift rail tabs so the overall distance between 1st and 2nd for example (on the top of the stick) is under a foot, compared to the hurst which is unbelievably long- you can punch the dash on a missed shift. I have a relatively new 3 spd duff shifter I am not using which I should sell but don't think I have all the mounting brackets so it's a wash. Get the duff's shifter.
There is a Hurst Bronco specific shifter that (I think) copies the Duff's reworking of Hursts standard shifter. They both sell for about the same price, which is 3 or 4 times the price of Hursts standard shifter.
