Newbie here.

I came across a great deal on a Mr. Gasket universal 3 speed floor shifter. It's not recommended for broncos or 4wd's. Does anyone know if these can be modifed to fit the early bronco or what the differences are between a 2wd shifter and a bronco 4wd floor shifter?

Thank you

Hey Scout, welcome!
Hmm, I think you'd have to have the specifc model number first, to be sure. Does the person selling it say what it's for?
The most important thing between the different kits, I think, are the shift-rods themselves. That's a very tight fit in there, under the tunnel, so you have to get them just right.
I'd bet that the shifter mechanism itself is common, but the kits that make it vehicle specific are rod and bracket related.

As a side note, Mr Gasket no longer has the Hurst line of products, so if it's a Hurst type, any info would have to come from B & M (new owner of Hurst) to be sure.

Good luck. Hope it's going to work. Nothing like a good deal to put a smile on a Bronco-owner's face.

The universal Mr. Gasket shifter is a 7667 which is intended for pickups and no 4wd's/broncos.

I suspect the differences are the linkage due to intereference with t-case or crossmember. Shifter handle length is probably an issue as well due to the smaller bronco passenger comartment and possible the shifter mechanism mounting bracket again due to interference with the t-case.

Cost? Thats the best part. It's free and it's new in box. For the price I could modify the mounting bracket, shifter linkage and the handle.

It has to be the mounting hardware and location of shifter. I would guess that the shifter for 2wheel drive would sit back further on the transmission.
I have a HURST shifter on mine and it has short mounts.

Hold out and buy a new or used Duff's 3-spd floor shifter. They are of course specific to EBs and they have the shortest throw (even shorter than the Hurst-branded model which is for the EB). No hitting your knuckles on the dash when speed shifting into second gear!

With enough modification you can probably make the Mr. Gasket one work. But Duff's is by far the best one out there out of the box.

I had the universal shifter in mine when I bought it.

I am not sure if it was installed correctly but it was horrible.
Everyone once in a while it would get stuck between 1st and 2nd. Usually at a stop light, on a hill.

I purchased a used used Duff shifter and put new bushings in it.

I will second that advice
