I am using a cheap 3 way toggle switch for my heater control in dash and having huge voltage drops/fluctuations in voltage. I assume the cheap switch isn't rated to 20amps and looking to put in a better one like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/30-Amp-Toggle-Switch-Polarity-Reverse-DC-Motor-Control-/160140769301

Obvious I wouldn't be using the DC reverse - any reason this switch wouldn't work? I know its 30 amp, but with the chevy blower in this I assume iam pushing 20 amps as it is...

I currently just have the heater wired to one side and the other on my cheap three way switch - again assume I would wire this one the same way.

In the sticks of MT
O'Reilly auto parts shows a 3-position 35 amp switch in stock in my local store for $4.99. Dorman part no. 85983.

I too run a 3 way toggle for my heater blower, but I have no idea what the switch rating is and I am not running the Chevuhlay blower either.

I would say it would work, not sure for how long though. You could use a 3 position low amp switch to control a couple of relays, which would help with the voltage drop but it would require a little more wiring. Use one relay for high and one for the low fan speed.

...having huge voltage drops/fluctuations in voltage.
Where exactly are you measuring this voltage (position of each meter probe), and under exactly what conditions (key, engine, headlights, blower switch, blower speed...)?
I assume the cheap switch isn't rated to 20amps...
Why are you assuming? Didn't you look at it when you installed it? Nearly all switches have their ratings stamped on their cases. How did you acquire the switch?

Yes. A polarity-reversing switch doesn't work the way a common SPDT or SP3T switch does. At best, you could get on & off from it.
...three way switch - again assume I would wire this one the same way.
Most 3-way switches have 4 terminals (unless, by "3-way" you mean 3 terminals); most polarity reversing switches have at least 4 terminals; sometimes 6. You need to be a lot more specific about what you have, what's happening, and what you WANT to happen.

Measuring at the battery and the dash wiring (newer Centech harness).

Battery has 12.7v unhooked
Headlights off, heater off - 14.55v (after i rev to 1800 RPM to kick on the alternator) at idle 550rpm
Headlights on low/hi, heater off - 14.45v at the battery at 550rpm idle (hi/low beams make no diff)
Headlights on low/hi, heater on low iam getting 14.35v at idle
Headlights on low/hi, heater on high - 12.75 to 14v at idle - lights dim and brighten, engine rpms are unsteady at idle until I go above 1000rpm then iam a steady 13.25v

Why are you assuming? Didn't you look at it when you installed it? Nearly all switches have their ratings stamped on their cases. How did you acquire the switch?

Nope, just looked for a three way switch, at the time i was in the mountains and it was very very cold and my stock heater switch literally disintegrated behind the dash. I needed a heater and it was the only 3 way switch i could find at the time that would fit the little round hole (didn’t have any way to drill it out.)

Bought the switch from some backwater store, was the only thing they had at the time - forgot to mess with it over the summer.

Yes. A polarity-reversing switch doesn't work the way a common SPDT or SP3T switch does. At best, you could get on & off from it.

Thats all iam looking for - on/off/on to operate the blower

Most 3-way switches have 4 terminals (unless, by "3-way" you mean 3 terminals); most polarity reversing switches have at least 4 terminals; sometimes 6. You need to be a lot more specific about what you have, what's happening, and what you WANT to happen.

as above, turn on the blower both low and high - on/off/on

I do have another alternator on order. I know that the current alternator cannot keep up with the demand at idle nor at the rpms I run. Iam about to add more load to the system so want something that can handle now and the future. Reviewing the current alternator paper work it says its rated at 90 amps at 4500 RPM - the lowest RPM test they did was 1800 RPM’s and it says it should put out 45 amps.. Iam not sure the RPMs listed are for the alternator or the engine - assume alternator and there must be some math problem to figure out where the engine RPMs are but iam pretty sure this alt cannot keep up with the load anyway.

FYI - i redline on or about 4200 RPM and rarely see anything over 3000RPM 95% of the time, i thought about putting a smaller pulley on but in the end the cost/time advantage wasn’t worth a new bigger alt.

I just want to make sure the switch is rated for the heater amperage really…

Measuring at the battery...
The switch has nothing to do with that voltage.
...and the dash wiring (newer Centech harness).
That's not an "exact" location.
...on/off/on to operate the blower...
Why did you list "on" twice? On is on, and there's no reason to have 2 switch positions do 1 thing. If you mean Low, Off, & High, that's very different.
...1800 RPM’s and it says it should put out 45 amps.. Iam not sure the RPMs listed are for the alternator or the engine - assume alternator...
Right. Alternator mfrs., marketers, & testers can't know the sizes of your pulleys - they only know the shaft RPM of the alternator itself.
...there must be some math problem to figure out where the engine RPMs are...
RPM(alt) x DIA(crankpulley) / DIA(altpulley) = RPM(crank)
I just want to make sure the switch is rated for the heater amperage really…
Then read its ratings off its case. The only other way would be to measure the temperature of the contacts under the full load of the blower at the maximum alternator voltage, but that's not practical.

But a workaround would be to simply buy a new switch that you KNOW is rated for it. On/Off only requires an SPST (common 2-terminal) switch. For Off/Low/High, you need either an SPDT with an "off" position, or (more commonly) an SP3T (and you won't use one of the throws, making that position "off"). Amazon & eBay are loaded with them. Measure the mounting hole (usually 1/2") and choose the knob style you like. Post links to the ones you like & someone can tell you which ones are correct.

Installed the new 200amp alternator and cured the voltage drops and fluctuations. My voltage is a rock steady 14.5 volts under any load even when the heater is on high. Exception is the electric compressor which makes the voltage drop .5v.

Replaced the toggle switch i had in the dash (turned out it was a 20amp) with a 25 amp to see what would happen, seems to have almost no effect so good to go there as well.

Made sure I had a new belt, using a goodyear gatorback as they seem to work a bit better than the normal belts - no belt slippage that I can see for now but will keep an eye on things.

Thanks for the info.

A quick thread hack here. I just installed the cheby motor and squirrel cage still using the original fan control switch. I only have one fan speed now and I have to turn it two clicks, which would be the low position, to get the fan to work. Any idea what I hooked up wrong or do I need to change something else as well to get two speeds?
