ETA sorry folks forgot to say this will be going in my 72 Bronco

I have a line on a newly rebuilt 302 EFI HO out of an 89 Mustang it had 60K miles before rebuilding at a shop. The guy is putting a 4.6 in his Mustang and wants it gone. The cost is $725.

I was also thinking of taking my current 302 with less than 25K on rebuild and trying out one of those Edelbrock performer kits with a carb, cam heads.

The Edelbrock is more expensive obviously.

Couple questions. anyone have experience with the Edelbrock kits? How about the 302EFI?

I have never messed with the 302 EFI so be gentle. I am guessing I won't be lucky enough to have this be a straight out swap. Aside from the electrical stuff with the EFI is this a straightforward project or a potential nightmare?

And if you are feeling extra generous with the info Any pros and cons to the two. I have looked around and I have seen enough conflicting info on the web that I have hurt my brain and have decided to start from scratch with the experts here.

And finally am I over thinking this and letting the fact that it is EFI make it seem more complicated than it is?

Thanks in advance

Respectfully,

John

The Mustang HO engine in stock form puts out between 185 and 205 HP depending on which dyno reading you get. I don't know about the edelbrock setup.
The Mustang HO engine in stock form is dead solid reliable. I don't know about the edelbrock
EFI is awesome, better mileage, works at all altitudes. Takes a bit to install, but well worth it once its done right ( don't reinvent the wheel, use a RJM harness, and get an EFI fuel tank ) and you will love it.

I have an Edelbrock set-up on the 54 Chevy. After 4 years of service it's been flawless.

Thanks man I have to admit part of me wants to stick with the old school stuff because its what I know and what I am comfortable with. While part of me has this desire to try something new so I can totally screw my truck up and get frustrated and angry but learn something and be able to say I did it. ;D

Great scoop thanks. Your comments about the EFI seem pretty sticky as in folks I have talked to in general about them love em for the reasons you state.

The HP kinda bums me out my current 302 should still have at least 300HP based on bench numbers only. Its a pretty stout motor and we figure with the edelbrock group we should get 400 HP. If my math is right %)

I think boredom is getting the best of me I need to make a careful decision on this. So I really appreciate the input it helps.

It does and while you are at it can you comfort me by promising me that I won't blow my rig up? I have really bad luck.

There is tons of info available on the swap. If you read up, and ask lots of questions ( and follow the advice of the experienced) you won't blow up your rig. Heck, as long as you use high pressure hose and high pressure clamps and don't light any matches around the gas lines you won't blow it up.

Ok cool thanks a ton... I have to admit my luck is so bad I could be sitting on the commode reading about it and something will go wrong with the engine swap without me even touching it. I always seem to make it through my "projects" though. My poor wife has basically become an ER doc via OJT taking care of me.

Anyhow, thanks for the help folks got some stuff to think about. I really appreciate it.
