302 Firing order BRAIN FART!!!!

Ok so I know that the firing order for a stock 74 302 is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. What I cant for the life of me figure out is how that determines where on the distributer the wires go. The engine was running prior to my C-4 swap, and I did have to remove some of the wires for other reasons during this time. So it is entirely possible that I messed up the wire placement when I put them back on.

The picture below is a drawing of how the wires are run now. The numbers on the distributer represent which cylinder the wires are connected to.?:?

1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 is read in the direction the distributor rotates, which i cant remember right now but you can figure out.
Best way to fix your issue: remove plugs and put your finger over the #1 plug hole, crank over untill you feel the pressure build up. Look to see where the rotor is pointing. the wire just ahead of where it will be rotating to is #1. Now just attach in that order 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 in the deirenction the rotor was rotating.

Ok, so then the wire placement should read, in a counter clockwise cirle, 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8, around the distributer? If thats the case I really screwed that one up. Maybe thats why it's not firing right now:cry:

Thanks guys.

Yes, all you need to do now is make sure #1 wire is installed on the cap where the rotor is pointing at it (or close to it) when #1 piston is at TDC (top dead center).
Goofy sentence but you get the idea.
You didn'r remove you dizzy did you?

Not just Top Dead Center, but Top Dead Center on the compression stroke!!! Very Important!!!

Pull the #1 spark plug (and/or pull the rest of them to make it easier to turn the engine over).
Put your finger over the #1 spark plug hole.
Turn the engine over until you have air pushing out of the hole around your finger. This is the compression stroke.
Slowly turn the engine over until the timing mark lines up with the TDC mark on the balancer, or until you can see the top of the piston when you look down the spark plug hole.

Here's a formal pic of the distributor layout for a 5.0. It shows the 5.0 firing order, not the 302. It shows the #1 position on the distributor in the factory location.

Well, I pretty much had everything on the 1-4 side mixed up, and everything on the 5-8 side correct. Thanks for the help. Once everything was put on correctly, it fired right up.
