302 revs really high at startup

Finally got my pertronix dist and flamethrower II installed. Now on startup it sounds like it's throttled to the floor, surrounded the neighbors love me. Checked the linkage and it's not sticking. Is this just a timing issue? I don't want to blow it up.

No amount of timing would make it sound like its "throttled to the floor". Something else is going on.

Any time you start it up, or just the first startup after it's cooled down?
Maybe it's just running up higher on the choke now that your ignition is working better?

Likely a combination of items.

Assuming you're using a Motorcraft carb, adjust your choke fast idle cam (screw on passenger side) & your idle (screw on driver side) until the idle is more manageable.

Then verify timing. Set base timing to 8-10 at idle (vacuum advance disconnected). Adjust idle screw.

Connect vacuum (if it's connected to manifold, timing could go over 30 degrees at idle). If idle goes up, adjust it again.

Found the culprit. The throttle spring somehow got bent Ata slight angle and wouldn't allow the carb to return to idle. Boy do I feel stupid
