302 to 351W swap questions

Going from the old 302 to a 351W in a couple weeks and need to start accumulating all the necessary little parts. Going to replace the clutch/throwout bearing and flywheel while I have it out.

Couple questions:

1. What clutch/pressure plate and flywheel would you recommend for street/offroad?

2. Was told this 351 has the push-in dipstick tube on the side of the block...will the Lokar dipstick for the 302 work out?

3. Need to get the alt/PS relocation brackets from WH4x4...what belts/hoses did you guys use?

Would appreciate any tips you guys can provide so I can be ready to get this thing in and running when it shows up.

Thanks!

I used a Luks 11" when I did mine, doing well after 6000 miles.

Can't help with this, I used the Fox body 351 pan which has the dipstick in pan.

Made my own brackets, welded nuts to flat stock, nuts set back in freeze plugs on heads. I reused the entire front dress, timing cover out, off the 302. Everything fit, including the belts.

Trim a 1/2" off the gas pedal mounting bolts that stick out of the firewall, while the engine is out. My drivers side head got hung up and caused considerable delay figuring out why. You'll love the extra torque of the 351.

1) anything from stock on up will do. I ran a stock 302 replacment clutch behind a very warmed up 351 for years. Only failed with the input shaft seal went on the trans and poured oil directly on the disk.
2) doubt it, but maybe. There are a varity of dipstick options. Even a few different push in versions. But get it wrong and the results will often be disastorious. Too much oil can be worse then too little.
3) stock 302 everything. the relocation brackets put the accessories back in the 302 locations. 302 water pump, 302 hoses. All works.

What oil pan do you have? You need a rear or dual sump. Front or mid sump won't work.

Thx for the input. Have a rear sump pan. Will give Lokar a call and see if they can figure out which block I'm talking about. The gas pedal bolt trimming is a great tip

One caution 5.8/351Ws like 5.0/302s have either 28oz.or 50oz. balance. The original 302s were 28oz. Take the original 351 damper off the doner engine to a crank shop and see what you've got. Also, clearance at the left rear corner of the intake to the fire wall can be tight but it will go in.

Nope

All 351s left the factory as the 28 oz-in balance factor.
Only the late 302/5.0 after '82 had the 50 oz-in balance factor.

Just get a flywheel and clutch and flywheel for an 80's F150 with a 4 speed in it.

The dipstick tubes should be the same-

No idea on relocation brackets for accessories, my Explorer stuff bolted right up without issue.

I stand corrected on the 28oz. balance for 351s. The crank shop that checked my dampener misinformed me.

Got the motor in and fired up! Sounds like a beast. Waiting for a new Champion Radiator to arrive,as i found out that my stock one was coming apart. Have to replace some PS hoses and other stuff but the majority is over. Should be on the road by the end of the week :)
