I have a 302 with a 351 firing order ( i bought it this way), my best guess is that there is a 351 cam installed. If someone has another idea please tell me but it runs great so I'm not trying to change it.

I'm getting ready to buy a new distributor, I've decided to go with the MSD pro-billet. My question is which distributor do i buy the 302 or the 351? As i understand it the distributor runs off of the cam??? If i have a 351 cam do i need the 351 distributor??? How do i tell which stock distributor i have now?

And last question. Which pro-billet should i buy? The ready to run Part# 8352 or the other one that says it fits the 302, part #8582?

Thanks!

You should only be able to use a 302 cam in it since the oil pump nipple and total length is different than a 351 (351 dizzy will not fit). You just wire it for the 351 firing order.

Okay, so are you saying that it's possible there is a 351 cam installed but that a 302 distributor will still fit?

Thanks for the quick reply.

302 dizzy is what you need. Yeah the 351 cam is an interesting one, not sure why its in there unless they were going efi later on. All I know is if it is a 302 block you need a 302 diz no matter what else is in there.

What was the 302 out of? A 5.0 L High output motor (302) uses a 351 firing order.

Get a 302 distributer the 351 is too long. More important is the issue of the drive gear. If you have a roller cam you need a steel gear. If not then get a cast iron gear. If your old gear is ford, you can clean it with some brake cleaner and see what color it is and that will tell you what material it's made from using this chart.

The distributer follows the block. Whatever block you have is what distributor to use.
