I am at a loss. On the left is a duraspark dizzy, on the right is the EFI dizzy. The duraspark is 5.05" from the mounting surface to the end of the shaft, EFI is 5.6". The EFI dizzy will not seat fully because the oil pump driveshaft bottoms out on a shelf inside the dizzy shaft.

the gear is the same distance from the mounting surface on both.

Thoughts?

so ford swapped to a shorter oil pump drive shaft/longer distributor shaft when they moved to EFI. My options are to

1. remove the old oil pump shaft and replace it with the correct lenght
2. dremel out the disrtibutor shoulder to give more depth in the dizzy shaft

I'm going with option 2.

I ran into this once and the dizzy was less than 1/4" from seating so I trimmed the driveshaft to fit. Never had a problem with it.

I thought about that as well, but I really don't want to drop the pan.

What vehicle did you get that dizzy from?

they are. I confirmed that the driveshaft is slipping into the dizzy shaft, and that the dizzy is contacting the driveshaft retainer. I could try to slide the retainer down, but I'd rather cut the dizzy than risk dropping the shaft into the pan.

What, you don't want to drop the pan to go fishing for a shaft? It's tons of fun.... So I've heard ;-)

Seriously though, there must me a better way; perhaps a different doner. My concern is a situation in which you need to replace the dizzy on the road. You won't have any way of modifying it, then you are stuck.

Cut the needed amount off the distributor, that's what I did..worked good when I used it ...

On then road all you need is a hacksaw blade to trim off a replacement distributor...how many distributors do we replace on the road...maybe internals. I don't have a distributor anymore so that's not an issue...

I'm going to see if I can get the retainer to move down 1/8 to make it work.

tried to get the retainer down, not happening. Cut down the distributor, didn't help. The shaft was not swaged out through the whole lower extension, rather there was a hex piece welded to a pipe that was then turned down. I had to dremel out the round piece to clearance for the hex shaft of the oil pump driveshaft. What a huge pain in the rear. Next time, lets hope there never is a next time, I'll find a dizzy that is hex the whole way through.

Piece of pipe welded onto to the oil pump driveshaft? Did you take pics?

no, what i mean is that the distributor shaft looks like a piece of pipe, just a round hole, then there is an extension welded to the pipe portion that is swaged for 5/16 hex oil pump drive shaft. The distributor shaft is not hex the whole way below the cam gear.
