I have a duel sumo pan on my 351W. I was going to use a M83HV pump from Melling but it won't fit because it is taller then the M83. Has anyone else encountered this and what are the options?
I am running the Melling HV pump, my pan is an '82 F150 2WD rear sump. have to make a little clearance in one corner for the front diff. Did that the first time I took it out. After that, I put in some front bumpstops and haven't hit the pan again.

The duel sump pand I have seen state that they din't fit the HV pump.
The dual sump will NOT fit a HV pump. You do not need an HV pump with a 351w anyway. They have a GREAT stock oiling system. Just put a stock pump in and run it.

Call a FORD performance shop and they will tell you the same thing.
I seem to remember using a H.V. pump on a 351W with the dual sump pan, I had to file one of the corners on the pump a little and put a little bump on the pan from the inside with a ball peen hammer and I checked clearance with a little green ball of clay
I read a post somewhere recently about Dist. gear problems possibly caused by the H.V. pump and it seemed to make sense to me, I had the compression pin that holds the gear on my dist. shear once when I ran the H.V. pump I fixed it by pressing in a solid steel pin, apparently the H.V. pump puts more stress the gear than the stock, I agree with A.Burns just run a stock pump should work fine.
Thanks. I was worried I had the wrong pan. I was contimplating taking the HV unit back based on all the posts before. I wanted to run the HV originally to compensate for the fact that my old engine had no pressure at all. I'm going to return the HV and stick with the original.
A stock pump with normal clearances is just fine. you only need the HV pump if you build a sloppy engine.
Mine is a sloppy engine, I wish I set the clearances to stock instead of as loose as I did. I'll take care of that on the next engine.
I just clearanced mine like tonto said. Ran into the same problem when I built my 351W. Filed part of the pump and tapped the pan to clear. Been runnin a HV pump since motor was new 7K ago and no problems. Also using 15W50 Mobil 1 year round and it works good. But, I do live in a mild climate. After doint more research, I agree with ABurns, it is really not needed.
8) 8) 8) I have a milling pump got one for the van has machind screws insted of bolts and it cleared ok I put it in a long time ago the only way to fly. I use them in all the motors I take apart not had any problems with them ;D ;D ;D Bill 8) :
