I want a bigger alt.... not really intrested in paying a bundle so junkyard specials are the way for me. Was looking at the 3g (and 130amp delco) both have internal regulators which make it difficult for my homemade welder setup. Any ideas on using a big alternator and my welder?

Although I cannot recommend doing this to an alternator, I can at least steer you in the right direction. The 3G's regulator is mounted to the back of the alternator. It is easily accessable and you can grind the regulator portion off its mounting plate. i.e. It can be easily modified to do what you want.
More importantly, when comparing the 3G to the Delco, a stock 3G will have regular diodes in it, a 130amp Delco will most likely have avalanche diodes. They I don't know that much about welders, I do know you cannot get more than 32volts out of an alternator with avalanche diodes. So me thinks the Delco most likely will not work.

If you do a thread search, there have been quite a few threads/posts on this subject. I think some even have links to step by step instructions.

I have done a search already (3G welder*) came up with nothing

I had a 3G apart on the parts store counter last night. Not a very friendly to modify setup with the integral brush box/regulator setup. I pried the cover off to see what the diode setup looked like. Every thing was epoxied in which will make for a nasty stinky mess to grind out.

The IC board is epoxied to the cover, it grinds pretty easily. Leaving you with a flat mounting plate. It is not that hard, as I have done this several times to make externally regulated adjustable alternators, mostly for the 16/18volt stereo guys. The stuff is as hard as metal though, so you will need a bench grinder.

Alright, it sound like you are making some headway here, I need pics!

What welder are you running?

What does the regulator mod look like?
