I asked the shop who rebuilt a 4r70w for me what fluid to run. Surprisingly he said Mercon LV. Everything I've seen online said Mercon V for this era of 4r70w. I wonder if its due to the upgraded parts (billet drum, etcc...).

Thoughts?

If the shop is giving you any warranty on the transmission, use the fluid they said to use.

Normally it would be Mercon, but if they want LV, use LV. Don't know what they did inside. I don't know your transmission builder to ask them.

I don't recall much of a warranty, it has been sitting for several years. From my research, mercon LV is thinner.

4R70W’s used Mercon V, but maybe he installed something that requires the LV. I think I’d ask him again.
He said there was a Ford TSB stating that LV was superior and has great properties for heat and expansion. I never found that TSB.

Tempted to stick with Mercon V...

I know that the two fluids are incompatible with each other, so stick with one or the other. I run Mercon V in my 4R and LV in the 6R that is in my F-150.

Ford changed everything to LV around 09, there was something regarding the 4r75 but not the 4r70.

The 70 and 75 are nearly indentical. The 75 got a very minor bump in line pressure and the heat treatment on the planetary gears is to a harder level.
Did the rebuilder put in a 75 rebuild kit?
