4R70w with Ford EEC-IV Mass air EFI?

Starting a new thread on the secondary question in relation to my Explorer build. I am trying to decide whether or not to use my existing EEC-IV Mass air EFI, or to convert over to the Explorer EDIS EFI.

My major consideration is wanting to run the Explorer 4R70w. I can't seem to find any confirmation on running it with the older EEC-IV system without using a standalone controller.

Is anyone doing this with their "native" ECU?

I am 99.37% sure that unless you are running a megasquirt or a chip that would support it IV has no transmission control. Neither IV or V have good aftermarket support and IV is almost obsolete if you are trying to find reliable remanufactured parts.

EFI guys harnesses are plug and play and the wiring is a breeze if you plan to use the EEC-V form the Explorer to run the EFI/Transmission

So the Explorer ECU is compatible with the old EEC-IV EFI?

I like the idea of running the new stuff, just hesitant due to no previous exposure to it.

There were a few options. '94/5 mustang had 5.0 with AOD-E. Shift points are off since the gearing is different. Tried that 15 years ago. The tuner could never get the shift points correct. Eventually went to a stand alone controller and that fixed it.

I would recommend just getting a stand alone controller. The tuning options are just so much better.

There is also Stinger Performance. They make an EEC-IV setup using MegaSquirt internals that can pretty much do anything you need. Custom tune for the engine running either MAF or Speed Density, transmission control, DIS or distributor, etc.
Computer is about $900 or so, which is not inexpensive. But it gives you a lot of choices in the long run.

Another option is Holley Terminator X controller. You would need to remove the Mass Air Flo but the tuning options would be huge. The controller runs the motor and the transmission. I am running one on my 408 and love it so far.

I believe IV and V have different pin out amounts, someone that knows for sure will chime in. The explorer ECU won't work with a mustang harness. Some components are mix and match but two completely different ignition systems.

There is a lot of carry over between Explorer and Mustang. Stuff like coolant temp and TPS have the same values. The early Explorer has the same injectors. MAF has a different calibration curve, but so do most of the different vehicles. The Explorer is when you started seeing more modern electrical connectors, small and better sealed.

The pinouts between Mustang and Explorer are completely different. 60 to 104 pins. Pins are a different design as well. It is not just move a few pins and all is good. It is a throw away the Mustang harness and set on the Explorer harness. If something doesn't plug in decide if you need the plug from the old Mustang harness or change the sensor/actuator to match the harness.

If your mustang EFI is running good and there really isn't a reason to mess with it, the stand alone will leave the functional mustang stuff just like it is. No messing up MAF calibrations with a sensor and computer that are no longer matched kind of stuff.
